NEWBURGH, NY - On the strength of their doubles play, the Mount Saint Mary College women's tennis team swept the opening weekend of matches, defeating Keystone College (9-0) on Saturday and Marywood University (8-1) on Sunday.
On Saturday, the Blue Knights allowed Keystone just eleven total games in the nine matches. Junior
Lindsay Searle (Unionville, Conn.), senior
Caitlin Giordano (Walden, N.Y.), and sophomore
Annmarie Llewellyn (Brookhaven, N.Y.) were 6-0, 6-0 winners in singles action.
Mount Saint Mary was tested on Sunday, but still prevailed with a sweep of the doubles against Marywood. Giordano teamed with freshman
Gabriela Murphy-Goldberg (Newburgh, N.Y.) for an 8-5 win at first doubles. Searle and junior
Rebecca Schwartz (New Windsor, N.Y.) prevailed by the same score at second doubles. Freshmen Jennifer Gregory (Albertson, N.Y.) and
Emily Gregory (Albertson, N.Y.) battled for an 8-3 victory at third doubles.
Jennifer Gregory took a 6-3, 6-4 decision at fifth singles and Llewellyn held on for a 7-5, 6-4 victory at sixth singles. Murphy-Goldberg dominated at the top of the lineup, capturing a 6-2, 6-1 win at first singles.
The Blue Knights will be tested once again on Tuesday as SUNY Oneonta comes to town. The match is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start.
