Blue Knights Drop Opener, 4-1

NEWBURGH, NY – The Mount Saint Mary College women's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to New Jersey City University on Tuesday evening during the season opener for both squads.

The Gothic Knights opened the scoring in the 13th minute with some help from a Mount Saint Mary defender. A throw-in by NJCU deflected off the heel of a Blue Knight and past a surprised goalkeeper to make the score 1-0.

Mount Saint Mary responded almost immediately, putting home an equalizer in the 16th minute. Senior Danielle Bucco (Washingtonville, N.Y.) made a nice move to get free down the right side and then launched a perfect cross to the head of senior Lauren Dorsa (Massapequa Park, N.Y.). Dorsa redirected the ball past the keeper to make it 1-1.

The tie wouldn't last long as NJCU answered in the 17th minute. A long cross from freshman Ashley Cunha (Edison, N.J.) found sophomore Julia Caseres (Union, N.J.) open at the back post where she headed in her first goal of the season. Cunha picked up another assist on a corner kick in the 36th minute. This time, she found the foot of sophomore Kaitlin Vargo (Edison, N.J.) who rocketed a one-time shot past the keeper to make it 3-1.

After an evenly matched second half, the Gothic Knights closed out the scoring with a penalty kick in the 90th minute. Caserers knocked home the PK with five seconds to play.

Up next for the Blue Knights is a trip to Maine where they'll take on Husson and Western New England in a two day span.
