NEWBURGH, NY – The Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team closed out a perfect Skyline Conference regular season on Saturday, defeating SUNY College of Old Westbury by a score of 97-62. It was the seventeenth win in a row for the Blue Knights who improved to 21-4 overall and to 18-0 in conference play. The Panthers dropped to 17-8 overall and to 13-5 in the Skyline.
The first half was highlighted by three major runs, two by Mount Saint Mary and one by Old Westbury. The Blue Knights outscored the Panthers in the opening seven minutes by a score of 19-2. Old Westbury responded with a 19-6 run to make the score 25-21 with just over eight minutes to play in the half. Over the course of the next seven minutes, Mount Saint Mary ripped off a 23-3 run to make it 48-24 with a minute to play. The teams traded buckets in the final minute to make the half time score, 50-26.
Old Westbury senior Pamela Robinson (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) opened the second half with a bucket for the Panthers, but that would be as close as they would get. Mount Saint Mary College junior
Meredith Paggi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) shot 8-for-9 from the field in the second half and scored 17 points to lead the Blue Knights to a 35-point win. Mount Saint Mary led by as many as 39 in the closing minutes.
Paggi finished with a game-high 25 points on 12-of-17 shooting. She completed a double-double with 14 rebounds and also dished out 6 assists. Junior
Shannon Sangster (Syracuse, N.Y.) also had a big game, tallying 18 points and 17 rebounds. Junior
Chrissy Zrowka (Brick, N.J.) scored 17 points and racked up a game-high 8 assists. The Blue Knights hot nearly 49-percent for the game.
Robinson led the Panthers with 21 points on 10-of-22 shooting. No other player from Old Westbury reached double figures. The Panthers only turned the ball over nine times, but were outrebounded by a wide margin, 64-33. They also shot just 28.1-percent from the floor.
Both teams will qualify for the Skyline Conference tournament, set to begin this coming Tuesday. Old Westbury will take on Purchase College in the opening round of the tournament on Tuesday, February 24 with the winner slated to take on top-seeded Mount Saint Mary College in the second round on Thursday. The Blue Knights earned a first round bye.
