NEW YORK, NY – Led by a pair of near double-doubles from freshmen
Carlos Valdez (Slate Hill, N.Y.) and
Kevin Milella (Floral Park, N.Y.), the Mount Saint Mary College men's basketball team completed a season sweep of Yeshiva University with a 65-61 victory on Wednesday evening. The Blue Knights improved to 6-18 overall and to 6-11 in the Skyline Conference. The Maccabees dropped to 7-16 overall and to 5-12 in league play.
With the game tied at 56 and four and a half minutes to play, sophomore
Matt Weinberger (Washingtonville, N.Y.) hit a jumper to give the Blue Knights a two-point cushion. Yeshiva turned over the ball on their next possession and it was Milella who hit a jumper to double the advantage to four at the 4:13 mark. The teams traded buckets in the next minute and then went scoreless until a three-point play from Yeshiva junior Martin Leibovich (Buenos Aries, Argentina) at the 1:28 mark made it a one-point contest.
After a timeout, Mount Saint Mary senior
Alex Kuchar (Rutherford, N.J.) was fouled and calmly sank a pair of free throws from the line to make it a three-point game. Yeshiva missed their next three shots and Milella closed out the game by hitting one-of-two from the line.
Milella led the Blue Knights with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Valdez nearly tallied a double-double with 12 points and 9 boards. Weinberger finished with 10 points and 6 assists.
Leibovich led Yeshiva with 16 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists. Junior Jeremy Pressman (Bala Cynwd, Pa.) had 14 points and sophomore Simon Brookim (Brentwood, Calif.) chipped in with 12.
The Blue Knights close their season on Saturday against the SUNY College at Old Westbury. The game is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. tip inside the Kaplan Center.
