BROOKLYN, NY –Mount Saint Mary College freshman
Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) led all scorers with 16 points as the women's basketball team won their thirteenth straight contest with a 64-40 victory at the Polytechnic Institute of NYU on Monday night. The Mount rose to 17-4 overall and to 14-0 in the Skyline Conference, while Polytechnic fell to 7-13 and 4-10 in Skyline play.
After the Blue Knights jumped out to a quick 4-0 advantage, Polytechnic responded with a mini 6-0 run to take a brief two point lead, thanks to a basket by freshman Margaux Pickell (Howell, N.J.) and a free throw by junior Damei Mahama (Kearny, N.J.). The Blue Knights would take back the lead for good, 7-6, on a three-point basket from junior
Chrissy Zrowka (Brick, N.J.). Still leading by one point, Horvers ignited a ten point run for the Mount by draining a triple. The Blue Knights would lead by as many as twenty in the first half and held a 34-16 advantage at the intermission. The Blue Knights shot 44.1-percent in the first half, while the Blue Jays shot 22.2-percent.
Zrowka put the Blue Knights back up by twenty with a jumper fifty-nine seconds into the second half. After five consecutive points from Polytechnic, the Mount answered with a bucket from junior
Shannon Sangster (Syracuse, N.Y.). The Blue Jays would not get closer than thirteen points for the rest of the way. The Blue Knights put the game away for good with three consecutive three-pointers, one each from Horvers, freshman
Sarah Joseph (East Hampton, Conn.), and junior
Catie Biordi (Beacon, N.Y.). The Mount won their second straight contest by the score of 64-40.
In addition to Horvers' 16 points, junior
Meredith Paggi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) tallied 10 points. Joseph totaled a game-high 4 assists to go along with 8 points. The Mount shot 40.6-percent for the game and they continued to dominate at the defensive end, limiting the Blue Jays to just 25.0-percent shooting for the evening.
Freshman Katie Jo Sunday (Reading, P.A.) and Mahama led the Blue Jays with 10 points each. Pickell chipped in with 9 points. The Blue Knights out-rebounded Polytechnic, 46-28.
The Blue Knights will play their next game on Thursday, February 12. The third game of a five-game road trip, the Blue Knights will take on Bard College starting at 6:00 p.m. It will be the first game of a women's and men's basketball doubleheader. The Blue Knights defeated the Raptors 78-31 last month at the Kaplan Center.
