NEWBURGH, N.Y. - Senior
Shannon Sangster (Syracuse, N.Y.) and sophomore
Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) each scored 15 points as the Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team defeated St. Joseph's College, 60-42, in Skyline Conference action on Saturday. The Blue Knights bumped up to 5-2 overall (3-0 Skyline) while the Golden Eagles dropped to 2-2 (1-2 Skyline).
Mount Saint Mary limited St. Joseph's to just 4-of-26 shooting in the first half and led 31-11 at the break. At one point during the half, Horvers knocked down three consecutive three-pointers, part of a 17-1 run by the Blue Knights.
With just under ten minutes to play in the game, the Mount grabbed its largest lead of the night (50-25) as sophomore
Rachel Russo (Trumbull, Conn.) knocked down a jumper. St. Joseph's didn't quit though, and got right back into the game with a 17-0 run, making the score 50-42 with five minutes to go. However, the Golden Eagles wouldn't score again. The Blue Knights locked down on defense and ended the game on a 10-0 run to make the final score, 60-42.
Sangster shot 7-for-9 from the floor and also collected 12 rebounds to go along with her 15 points. Horvers nailed four three-pointers and pulled down 7 boards as a complement to her 15 points.
St. Joseph's senior Trish McMahon (Patchogue, N.Y.) led all scorers with 16 points. She was 6-for-12 from the floor and also totaled a team-high 9 rebounds. No other player reached double figures for the Golden Eagles who shot just 29.1% for the game.
Mount Saint Mary continues their Skyline Conference season on Wednesday when they'll play host to Sage. The game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Kaplan Center.
