NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Behind 15 points each from senior
Catie Biordi (Beacon, N.Y.) and sophomore
Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.), the Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team defeated Purchase College, 74-54, on Tuesday night in the Kaplan Center. The Blue Knights improved to 3-2 overall (1-0 Skyline), while the Panthers dropped to 2-2 (1-1 Skyline).
The Mount carried a seven point advantage at the half and never looked back, stretching the lead to as many as twenty-three. Leading by ten with just under seven minutes to play, the Blue Knights scored fifteen of the next seventeen points and led 72-49 with exactly 1:00 showing on the clock.
Biordi connected on 6-of-7 from the floor and drained all three of her attempts from behind the arc. The senior also did a nice job shutting down Purchase's leading scorer, senior Jessie Domes (Glenwood, N.Y.). Domes did finish with a game-high 16 points, but it came on 4-of-12 shooting from the floor and five free throws inside the final minute.
Horvers had a nice shooting night as well, making 6-of-9 attempts from the floor. Senior
Shannon Sangster (Syracuse, N.Y.) finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore
Natalie Garbie (Bayville, N.J.) finished with 10 points. Senior
Chrissy Zrowka (Brick, N.J.) tallied a season-high 12 assists.
For the Panthers, seniors Shayla Diaz (Beacon, N.Y.) and Liila Mack (Monticello, N.Y.) joined Domes in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
It was an ugly first half for both teams as they combined for 38 turnovers in the opening twenty minutes. The Blue Knights finished the contest with a season-high 28 turnovers. The Panthers totaled 30 turnovers.
Mount Saint Mary made up for the turnovers with a fantastic shooting night. The Blue Knights shot 57.1-percent from the floor. Purchase closed out the game at 40.5-percent, the highest percentage logged against the Mount this season.
Up next for the Blue Knights is a road trip to the College of Mount Saint Vincent. The Dolphins have played the Mount close in recent meetings and the game promises to be one of the tougher Skyline tests for the Blue Knights. Tip off is at 6:00 p.m. in Riverdale, New York.
