NEWBURGH, NY – Needing a victory to clinch a spot in the Skyline Conference tournament, the Mount Saint Mary College women's soccer team defeated St. Joseph's College, 2-1 in overtime, thanks to a goal by senior
Kristen Maggio (Smithtown, N.Y.). The Blue Knights improved to 8-7-2 overall and to 4-2-2 in the Skyline while the Golden Eagles dropped to 6-12-1 (4-4-1 Skyline).
In the 9th minute of overtime, Maggio fired a shot that snuck inside the upper corner of the frame to give Mount Saint Mary the victory. Sophomore
Erin McKeon (Watertown, Conn.) was credited with an assist for her cross to the middle of the field. The Blue Knights had dominated the overtime period to that point, with senior
Danielle Bucco (Washingtonville, N.Y.) launching three consecutive shots on goal.
The game got to overtime because of a late goal by St. Joseph's sophomore Kaitlin Arthurs (West Babylon, N.Y.). Arthurs tallied in the 87th minute to tie the game at 1-1.
The Blue Knights opened up the scoring in the first minute as sophomore
Alexi Pascale (Monroe, N.Y.) found the back of the net. Senior
Lauren Dorsa (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) crossed the ball to the middle where Pascale finished the play for a 1-0 advantage.
Mount Saint Mary finished with a 25-7 advantage in shots on goal. St. Joseph's senior Dana Carney (Patchogue, N.Y.) made nine saves to keep the Golden Eagles in the contest.
The Blue Knights will head to Yeshiva University tomorrow for their final regular season Skyline Conference contest. Mount Saint Mary needs either a win or a tie to clinch the fourth seed and home-field advantage in the first round of the Skyline tournament.
