NEWBURGH, NY – The Mount Saint Mary College women's soccer team lost a well-played Skyline Conference game to Farmingdale State College, 2-0, on Thursday evening on Kaplan Field. The Blue Knights dropped to 7-7-2 overall and to 3-2-2 in the conference while the Rams bumped to 12-4-3 overall and to 7-0-1 in the Skyline.
In the 9th minute, Farmingdale took a 1-0 advantage with a beautiful play. Freshman Christina Merrill (Levittown, N.Y.) dribbled down the right side and centered a low, hard cross that found the foot of freshman Taylor Horgan (Long Beach, N.Y.). Horgan one-timed a shot past the diving goalkeeper to put the Rams on top.
The game would remain a one-goal affair until the 79th minute when sophomore Brittany Williams (Massapequa, N.Y.) finished off a play in the box. After a cross from the left side by Merrill, freshman Melissa Elie (Brentwood, N.Y.) took a touch on the ball and left it for Williams. The sophomore released a perfect shot that snuck in just beneath the crossbar.
Mount Saint Mary junior goalkeeper
Megan Cotta (Brick, N.J.) played an excellent game and finished with 11 saves. She was banged up in the second half after a collision, needing medical attention for a bloody lip, but remained in the game.
Senior
Danielle Bucco (Washingtonville, N.Y.) had the only two shots on goal for the Blue Knights. Sophomores
Erin McKeon (Watertown, Conn.) and
Gable Herczeg (Bethel, Conn.) played well in the midfield for the Mount.
The team's five seniors, Bucco,
Kristen Maggio (Smithtown, N.Y.),
Samantha Mech (Mahwah, N.J.),
Christina Patterson (West Hempstead, N.Y.) and
Lauren Dorsa (Massapequa Park, N.Y.), were honored in a ceremony before the game.
On Saturday, Mount Saint Mary will host St. Joseph's College in a make-or-break game for the final spot in the Skyline Conference standings. The Golden Eagles lead the Blue Knights by two points in the standings. The game is scheduled for noon on Kaplan Field.
