NEWBURGH, NY – The Mount Saint Mary College women's tennis team swept a pair of matches from Skyline Conference opponents over the weekend, pushing their overall record to 14-0 while claiming the top seed in the Skyline tournament with a 7-0 mark. The Blue Knights defeated Bard College, 8-1, on Friday and the Sage Colleges, 6-3, on Saturday.
Against Bard, Mount Saint Mary started quickly and captured all three doubles matches. Freshman
Gabriela Murphy-Goldberg (Newburgh, N.Y.) teamed with sophomore
Annmarie Llewellyn (Brookhaven, N.Y.) for an 8-4 victory at first doubles. Juniors
Rebecca Schwartz (New Windsor, N.Y.) and
Lindsay Searle (Unionville, Conn.) rolled to an 8-1 win at second doubles while freshmen twin sisters,
Emily Gregory and Jennifer Gregory (Albertson, N.Y.), dominated the match at third doubles, 8-3.
Murphy-Goldberg and Searle were quick to finish off opponents at first and second singles, each allowing only three games in two sets.
Emily Gregory also routed her opponent at sixth singles, 6-2, 6-1. Senior
Caitlin Giordano (Walden, N.Y.) snuck out another third set super tiebreaker, this time to win 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 10-6 at third singles. Schwartz also pulled out a super tiebreaker at fourth singles (6-1, 4-6, 10-8).
With a chance to clinch the top seed on Saturday, the Blue Knights received a strong test from Sage, but eventually prevailed, 6-3. Mount Saint Mary took two of the three doubles matches behind the strong play of Searle/Schwartz (8-1 at second doubles) and Gregory/Gregory (8-1 at third doubles).
In singles action, Llewellyn closed out a tight match at fourth singles, defeating Sage sophomore Briana Bixler (Highland, N.Y.) 6-3, 6-4. Junior
Laura Galante (Newington, Conn.) didn't miss a beat at fifth singles and cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win, while
Emily Gregory was a winner in straight sets at sixth singles, 6-2, 6-0. At second singles, Searle rallied from a first set hole and then controlled the final set to prevail, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.
The marquee match of the night was at first singles and featured a pair of opponents that were unbeaten in Skyline Conference play. Sage senior Christina Gray (Clifton Park, N.Y.) was a winner in three sets over Murphy-Goldberg, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Gray improved to 7-0 in Skyline play while Murphy-Goldberg dropped to 6-1. Gray and sophomore Erica Fitzgerald (Queensbury, N.Y.) teamed for a nice win at first doubles, knocking off Murphy-Goldberg and Llewellyn, 8-4.
Up next for Mount Saint Mary is a final Skyline match with Yeshiva University. The Skyline Conference tournament begins on Tuesday, but the Mount will receive a first round bye. The Blue Knights begin playoff action at home on Thursday.
