Mount Saint Mary Too Much For Sage

NEWBURGH, NY – The Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team did not show any ill effects of its last game against Purchase College, where they only scored 55 points for the game. The Blue Knights won their ninth straight by coasting past the visiting Sage Gators, 89-36, in the last game of a four game homestand Tuesday night at the Kaplan Center.

After an off-game on Saturday, junior Meredith Paggi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) was on fire in the early part of the contest, scoring 13 points before Sage even scored its first basket. The Blue Knights opened the contest with the first thirty-one points. Sage College junior Amber Muir (Schenectady, N.Y.) finally got her team on the board with a basket at the 6:44 mark of the opening half. The Gators actually closed the half on a 14-10 run to make it a twenty-six point game at the intermission, 40-14. The Blue Knights shot 51.6-percent for the first half, while the Gators shot a woeful 17.4-percent.

The second half would be more of the same. The Blue Knights started the half on a 16-0 run as Paggi continued her best game of the season. The junior finished with a career-high 26 points while playing just 16 minutes. She was 11-of-14 from the field, including 2-of-3 from downtown. The Mount's other leading scorer, freshman Sarah Joseph (East Hampton, Conn.), was also effective for her team. She finished with 9 points, 6 assists, and 4 steals. All thirteen members of the active roster scored at least two points in tonight's contest.

The Sage Gators were led by sophomore Elizabeth Donk (Phelps, N.Y.), who finished with 9 points. Her teammate, senior Kelley Barnes (Schenectady, N.Y.), chipped in with 8. The Mount shot 52.4-percent for the game, while Sage shot only 24.4-percent.

Mount Saint Mary, improves to 13-4 on the season and a perfect 10-0 in the Skyline Conference after winning their ninth game in a row. Meanwhile, Sage drops to 2-15 and 2-9 in conference play.

The Mount will have a few days off before their next Skyline Conference contest, at Mount Saint Vincent in Riverdale, N.Y., on Saturday January 31. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. with the men's game to follow. The Blue Knights escaped with a 59-57 home victory over the Dolphins on December 6, 2008. The Mount will return home on February 4 for a date with Polytechnic.
