NEWBURGH, NY – Led by 19 points and 11 rebounds from junior Shannon Sangster (Syracuse, N.Y.), the Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team earned their fifth straight victory with a 68-55 decision over SUNY College at Old Westbury on Saturday. The Blue Knights bumped up to 9-4 overall and remained perfect in the Skyline Conference at 6-0. The Panthers dropped to 10-5 overall and to 6-2 in the conference.
A three-pointer from junior Jess Tice (Altamont, N.Y.) at the 17:49 mark of the second half gave the Blue Knights a 39-32 advantage. Old Westbury streaked back into the game with a 10-2 run, capped by a jumper from freshman Courtney Milton (Bronx, N.Y.), and the Panthers led, 42-41, with under fifteen minutes to play.
From there, the defense picked up for Mount Saint Mary. Old Westbury would shoot just 7-for-21 for the rest of the game and turned the ball over eleven times in fourteen minutes. The Blue Knights gradually edged away from the Panthers and eventually put the game away with a 6-0 run near the six minute mark. Tice made a jumper at the 5:38 mark to extend the lead to seven, junior Catie Biordi (Beacon, N.Y.) made a layup at 4:14 to make it nine, and Sangster drained a jumper at 3:04 to make it an eleven point game.
The five starters for the Mount accounted for 59 of the team's 68 points in the game. In addition to Sangster's 19 points, juniors Meredith Paggi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and Chrissy Zrowka (Brick, N.J.) each had 13 points. Tice and Biordi contributed 7 points apiece.
Old Westbury senior Pamela Robinson (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.), despite shooting just 4-for-18 from the field, led the Panthers with 17 points. Sophomore Samantha Johnson (Queens Village, N.Y.) finished with 15 points.
Next up for the Blue Knights is Sage. The Mount will host the Gators on Tuesday, January 20, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
