NEWBURGH, NY – Junior Angie Merante (Holtsville, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals as first-place St. Joseph's College maintained their hold on the top spot in the conference on Saturday with a 3-0 defeat of Mount Saint Mary College. The Golden Eagles improved to 13-7 overall and completed an undefeated season in conference play at 9-0. The Blue Knights dropped to 10-5-1 overall and to 5-3-1 in the Skyline.
Freshman Kaitlin Arthurs (West Babylon, N.Y.) opened the scoring for the Golden Eagles right away, putting home an unassisted goal in the 4th minute. The game would remain 1-0 until late in the second half when Merante put home a goal in the 79th minute and then again in the 85th minute.
The Golden Eagles outshot the Blue Knights 20-2. Sophomore goalkeeper
Megan Cotta (Wall, N.J.) made five saves for the visiting Blue Knights.
Mount Saint Mary maintained a tenuous hold on fourth place in the conference but would fall to fifth if Sage defeats the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Sunday. Either way, the Blue Knights will play Sage in the opening round of the Skyline Conference tournament on Tuesday, November 4. The game will be played at the field of the higher seed at a time to be determined.
