NEWBURGH, NY – Led by stellar defensive performances from freshmen
Heather Schaeffer (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) and
Teresa Sorrentino (Bellerose, N.Y.), the Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball defeated the College of Mount Saint Vincent in five sets (25-22, 18-25, 25-20, 18-25, 15-9). The Blue Knights improved to 12-17 overall and to 6-3 in the Skyline while the Dolphins dropped to 10-9 and to 3-6 in conference.
Schaeffer and Sorrentino each finished with 22 digs and both did an excellent job of passing. Schaeffer made just one error on 42 return attempts while Sorrentino made just two errors on 25 attempts.
Freshman
Courtney Kenney (Hicksville, N.Y.) led the team with 18 kills and junior
Melissa Ribeiro (Yonkers, N.Y.) also reached double-digits with 11. Sorrentino finished with 9 kills and freshman Jackie Nadeau (Uniondale, N.Y.) had 7.
Sophomore
Liz Douress (Rahway, N.J.) had 4 blocks on the night and the team finished with 7. Junior
Katie Toole (Wallkill, N.Y.) collected 26 assists and freshman
Alyssa Zmuda (Glenwood, N.J.) had 11.
The Blue Knights complete the regular season at 12-17 and will have a week off before starting play in the Skyline Conference tournament. Mount Saint Mary will host Bard in a quarterfinal match on Wednesday, November 5 at a time to be announced.
