NEWBURGH, NY – For the second time in as many years, the Mount Saint Mary College women's tennis team will host the Skyline Conference championship match on Sunday. The Blue Knights defeated Sage in the semifinals by a score of 6-3 and will take on Bard in the finals beginning at 3:30 p.m.
The Mount captured two of the three doubles points at the start of the match. Juniors
Caitlin Giordano (Walden, N.Y.) and
Danielle Kehoe (Goshen, N.Y.) rolled at second doubles (8-0) while junior
Laura Wolons (Middletown, N.Y.) and freshman
Annmarie Llewellyn (Brookhaven, N.Y.) eked out an 8-6 win at third doubles.
Down the singles lineup, the Blue Knights took points at second, third, fourth, and fifth singles. Junior
Rebecca Schwartz (New Windsor, N.Y.) and Giordano were the first players off the courts, recording wins at second and fourth singles, respectively. Llewellyn clinched the match victory with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at fifth singles and then Kehoe was soon to follow with a 6-4, 6-1 win at third singles.
The Mount improved to 12-2 overall and will host Bard in what should be a very competitive championship match. The Blue Knights defeated the Raptors earlier this season by a score of 5-4, but all three of the doubles matches were hotly contested.
