Mount Saint Mary Cruises Past Hunter; Lawson Scores 1,000th Career Point

Newburgh, N.Y. - Mount Saint Mary College senior Vanessa Lawson (Kingston, N.Y.) scored 17 points including the 1,000th point of her career Wednesday night, as the Blue Knights defeated Hunter College, 75-53, in non-conference action at the Kaplan Center. The Mount improved to 11-1 on the year as the Hawks fell to 2-10.

Entering the game needing 17 points to eclipse the 1,000 point threshold, Lawson scored only five points in the first half. She heated up nicely in the second half, however, and hit a three-pointer from the corner with 3:40 to play to pull within one of the mark. With 1:14 remaining, junior LaSheila Augustin (Valley Stream, N.Y.) snagged an offensive rebound, allowing the Mount to continue their offensive possession. Lawson caught the ball in the post, but was fouled before she could attempt a shot. Shooting a one-and-one from the line, Lawson drained the first attempt for her milestone point. She shot 5-of-8 from the field during the half and scored 12 points.

Senior Jackie Markert (Voorheesville, N.Y.) had a monster first half for the Blue Knights as they took control of the game early. Markert scored six of the team's first eleven points as the cruised out to an 11-0 lead. She finished the half with 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe. MSMC closed the first half on a 9-0 run to take a 39-24 advantage into the break.

The Blue Knights would lead by no fewer than nine points for the entire second half and finished with a comfortable twenty-two point win. Hunter received a very strong effort from sophomore Andrea Buckham (Jamaica, N.Y.) who poured in 22 points and also pulled down 15 rebounds. Sophomore Shay Branch-El-Vielot (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) was the only other in Hawk in double figures with 15.

MSMC senior Chantel Anthony (Middletown, N.Y.) had another strong night at the point guard position, contributing eight assists. Sophomore Catie Biordi (Beacon, N.Y.) connected on 3-of-4 attempts from behind the arc for nine points off the bench.

Up next for Mount Saint Mary is a return to Skyline Conference action. They kick off the toughest part of their Skyline schedule with a road game at Mount Saint Vincent, this Saturday beginning at 2:00 p.m. They will also make trips to Farmingdale and Bard in the next week. Hunter head home for a date with Staten Island on Friday, starting at 7:00 p.m.
