Old Westbury, N.Y. - Mount Saint Mary College seniors
Vanessa Lawson (Kingston, N.Y.) and
Jackie Markert (Voorheesville, N.Y.) each posted a double-double, leading the Blue Knights to a 61-46 Skyline Conference victory over Old Westbury on Saturday afternoon. MSMC completed the season sweep of the Panthers and moved to 16-2 overall (10-1 Skyline). Old Westbury dropped to 6-10 overall and 2-8 in conference play.
The Blue Knights scored eleven of the first thirteen points and posted their biggest lead of the first half just before the break, carrying a 34-20 advantage into the locker room. The Panthers cut the lead to eleven several times during the second half, but never reduced the margin to single digits. MSMC took their biggest lead of the day with eleven minutes remaining, as sophomore Kelly McCourt (West Milford, N.J.) hit the second of three consecutive baskets for the Mount. The Blue Knights coasted the rest of the way to pick up the 61-46 win.
Lawson scored a game-high 17 points and also pulled down 10 rebounds. Markert had 14 points and 16 boards, 11 of which came on the offensive glass. Sophomore Shannon Sangster (Syracuse, N.Y.) just missed joining Lawson and Markert with a double-double, finishing the game with 10 points and 9 rebounds.
Junior Shameeka Bryan (Jamaica, N.Y.) led the Panthers with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Ashley Freeman (Bronx, N.Y.) had 13 points for Old Westbury, who shot just 32.7-percent from the field. Mount Saint Mary shot 35.0-percent, but out-rebounded the Panthers, 51-30.
After a week off, the Blue Knights will return home to host Purchase College on Saturday, February 2. The women's portion of a double-header is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. with the men's game to follow at 4:00 p.m.
