Old Westbury Completes Season Sweep of Mount with Dunk at Buzzer

Old Westbury, N.Y. - With the game tied at 71, freshman forward Lester Prosper (Bellmore, N.Y.) dunked an offensive rebound with one second remaining on the clock to give Old Westbury a 73-71 victory over Mount Saint Mary College in Skyline Conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon. The win completed the season sweep for the Panthers, who also scored on their last possession to defeat the Blue Knights on December 1, 65-63. Old Westbury moved to 9-8 overall and 8-2 inside the Skyline while Mount Saint Mary, losers of four in a row and six of their last seven, fell to 8-9 overall and 5-5 in conference play.

Knotted at 67 with just over two minutes to play, Mount Saint Mary junior Alex Kuchar (Rutherford, N.J.) dropped in one-of-two attempts from the foul line to give the Blue Knights a one point lead. The Panthers jumped in front on their next possession as Prosper hit a lay-up to make the score 69-68. After a missed three-pointer by the Mount, Old Westbury junior Garthlette James (White Plains, N.Y.) missed a pair of free throws to keep it a one point margin as the clock dipped below one minute.

An MSMC turnover with forty-five seconds to play led to a two-handed, breakaway dunk by James on a nice feed from sophomore Tremain Gary (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Now trailing by three with thirty seconds to play, MSMC's Kuchar drilled a three-pointer, forcing the seventh tie of the game. Following three time-outs and two given fouls by the Blue Knights, James fired a three-pointer with three seconds remaining. The shot rimmed out, but Prosper was there to grab the offensive rebound and dunk home the game-winning shot, giving the Panthers the 73-71 triumph.

In addition to his game-winning shot, Prosper posted gaudy numbers across the board on the way to his first career triple-double. He scored 18 points on 9-of-16 shooting, pulled down 13 rebounds, and blocked an incredible 14 shots. The 14 blocks were the highest total for any Division III player so far this season and only four shy of the NCAA Division III record.

James led all scorers with 22 points on 10-of-15 from the field. Senior Ian Johnson (Jamaica, N.Y.) and freshman Brandon Mays (Roslyn, N.Y.) also finished in double figures for the Panthers with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Kuchar led the Mount with 20 points. He was 4-for-4 from behind the arc and also dished out a team-high 5 assists. Freshman Tim Morris (Greenwich, N.Y.) had 16 points and 7 rebounds, while junior Chris Harrison (Baldwin, N.Y.) finished with 12 points and a team-high 9 boards.

At 5-5 in conference play, Mount Saint Mary faces a crucial part of their schedule over the next two weeks. Their next five games are against teams below them in the standings and fighting for the final playoff spots. The stretch commences at home against Yeshiva on Tuesday, January 29. The tip is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
