MSMC Rolls Over Another Skyline Foe

Newburgh, N.Y. - Led by 20 points from junior Jackie Markert (Voorheesville, N.Y.), the Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team rolled to an 80-43 victory over Skyline Conference member Old Westbury. The Blue Knights moved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 inside the conference, while Old Westbury dropped to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the Skyline.

Tied at 16 at the ten minute mark of the first half, the Blue Knights closed the half on a 25-8 run to take a halftime lead of 41-24. Trading baskets for the opening minutes of the second half, Old Westbury closed the gap to 15 at one point and trailed 50-34 with seventeen minutes to play. From there, the Blue Knights scored the next 21 points of the game to take a commanding 37 point lead with eight and a half minutes remaining. MSMC pushed the lead to as high as 39 before concluding the game with a 37 point margin of victory.

Markert connected on 9-of-11 attempts from the field and scored her 20 points in only 20 minutes of playing time. Senior Vanessa Lawson (Kingston, N.Y.) and sophomore Shannon Sangster (Syracuse, N.Y.) were the only other Mount players in double figures, finshing with 13 points each. Senior Chantel Anthony (Middletown, N.Y.) dished out a season-high 9 assists.

Ten players scored for the Mount in the game, including sophomore Kelly McCourt (West Milford, N.J.) and junior Brittany king (Cold Spring, N.Y.) who each had 8 points.

Mount Saint Mary will head to Yeshiva on Tuesday, December 4 for the second of two Skyline games between the two teams. The Blue Knights took the opening game of the series, 83-33. Tip-off on Tuesday is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. at Baruch College in New York, N.Y.
