Montclair, N.J. - Junior
Meredith Paggi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) scored 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting, leading the Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team to a non-conference victory over Montclair State Tuesday night, 75-52. It was the second win in as many years for the Blue Knights over the Red Hawks, and MSMC now leads the all-time series between the two teams, 3-2.
Sophomore guard Catie Biordi (Beacon, N.Y.) added 11 points while senior Vanessa Lawson (Kingston, N.Y.) had eight points and 10 rebounds as the Blue Knights remained unbeaten at 4-0.
Sophomore forward Catherine Cristino (Farmingdale, N.J.) led the way for Montclair State with 13 points. Losing for the first time in three games, the Red Hawks fell to 3-2 on the year.
Montclair State led 2-0 just 11 seconds into the game as Jackie Berry (Tuckerton, N.J.) scored on a lay-up. However, Mount Saint Mary would score 12 of the next 14 points to take control. Shannon Sangster (Syracuse, N.Y.) tied the game and Jackie Markert (Voorheesville, N.Y.) connected on a short jumper to give the Blue Knights the lead for good at 4-2. Lawson finished off a break, and after Cristino countered for MSU, Paggi capped off another break as Mount Saint Mary went up 8-4 just four minutes in. Paggi would add two free throws before Lawson completed the 12-2 run with a lay-up to give the Blue Knights a 12-4 lead.
Montclair State would get the lead back to within three several times over a 10-minute span, the last coming at 22-19 as Cristino sank the second of two foul shots. But Chantel Anthony (Middletown, N.Y.) converted a three-point play and Sangster and Paggi each added lay-ups as MSMC boosted their lead to 31-21 with 3:51 left in the opening period. The visitors carried a 35-25 advantage into halftime.
Paggi had a pair of three-pointers in the second half, including one seven seconds in, as Mount Saint Mary increased the lead to 13 points. A layup by Cristino got Montclair back to 40-29, but Paggi and LaSheila Augustin (Valley Stream, N.Y.) countered with buckets as Montclair State got no closer the rest of the way.
Markert and Sangster each finished with eight points and combined on 11 rebounds. Anthony had seven points and seven assists as the Blue Knights shot 15-of-29 (52 percent) in the second half and finished at 49 percent (31-of-63) for the game, including 5-of-9 from behind the arc.
Both teams are back in action on Thursday, November 29. Montclair State plays host to King's College (PA) at Panzer Gymnasium beginning a 6:00 p.m. while the Mount returns home to face another NJAC foe in William Paterson University. That contest in Newburgh, N.Y., tips off at 7:00 p.m.
