Eric Sturgis was named Mount Saint Mary College's new head men's tennis coach for the 2015 season.
Sturgis is a former collegiate and junior tennis player, and has a plethora of experience in tennis instruction and coaching. He has recently worked as an instructor at a tennis club in Ann Arbor, Mich. He started coaching high school tennis when he was 18 years old and has done so for 11 years since.
Sturgis is a member of the Michigan High School Athletic Association Board of Directors. He has coached seven individual State Champions, three doubles State Champions, and he took Troy High School to its highest-ever finish in school history (third) in 2007. He has been named Regional Coach of the Year three times. He has also been coaching at the USTA Junior Team Tennis level for the past eight years.
Sturgis is a United States Professional Tennis Registry High Performance certified tennis instructor. He has captained a 4.5 men's tennis team for the past four years. The team made the Sectional Championships last year.
Sturgis played one year of tennis at Adrian College, where he played No. 1 singles and doubles, compiling a 10-2 record in singles play and leading the team to its first conference-match victory in 20 years. He then transferred to Eastern Michigan University, where he served as a game administrator for the Division I women's tennis team.
Sturgis played in national tournaments throughout his Juniors career. He ranked as high as No. 20 in the Midwest.
Sturgis graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor's in history from Eastern Michigan University in 2014. He is currently working toward a Master's in coaching and athletic administration through Concordia University Irvine's online program.
Sturgis is a native of Ann Arbor, Mich., and currently resides in Newburgh, N.Y.
