Knights Sweep Golden Eagles in Senior Day Celebration

Newburgh, NY- 

The Mount Saint Mary College Knights softball team celebrated Senior Day in style, sweeping the St. Joseph's University- Long Island Golden Eagles in a thrilling doubleheader. The Knights won the first game 2-0 and took the second game by a decisive 7-4 score.

Game 1: Knights Blank Golden Eagles on MacDonald's Arm

The opening game was a pitcher's duel with MSMC's Grace MacDonald leading the way. MacDonald tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits while striking out 11 Golden Eagles batters. The Knights offense provided enough run support in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring their first run on a throwing error by the St. Joseph's shortstop.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Knights extended their lead when Olivia Ferara reached on another fielding error. Laura Dentato followed with a walk, and Chloe Graham reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Ferara to score.

Game 2: Offensive Outburst Powers Knights to Victory

Game 2 featured more fireworks as the Knights offense exploded for seven runs. MacDonald again earned the victory on the mound, this time allowing four runs on seven hits over seven innings of work.

The Knights trailed early but seized control in the bottom of the fifth inning. It started with MacDonald doubling, followed by clutch hitting by Samantha Bedig, Riley Norwood, and Kristen Tellier.  The inning was still in motion when Laura dentato got a hit and Chloe graham and Sophia Reed each earned a walk.  The Knights finished the inning now in the lead 4-2.  They went on to tack on three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with Olivia Ferara and Chloe Graham each hitting a singles.

Senior Salute

The day was extra special for the Knights as they recognized their seniors. MSMC honored 5th year players Laura Dentato, Melanie McClinchey, and Samantha Bendig, as well as seniors Bridget Morris, Olivia Ferara, Riley Norwood, Sofia Gannon and Sophia Reed. They also recognized departing team Manager Mary Milano.

Coach Howe on the Victories "Our defense was on point today and Grace [MacDonald] pitched two great games," said Head Coach Samantha Howe. "Our seniors have been a huge part of our program over the years and it was fitting to get the wins on their special day."

What's Next

The Knights continue their season with a road doubleheader against Hunter College on April 30th at 3 pm.

Individual Stats to Note

  • Grace MacDonald pitched two complete games, picking up two wins with a combined 16 strikeouts.
  • Chloe Graham was a standout at the plate with three RBIs over the two games.
  • Olivia Ferara reached base safely multiple times with a hit and two walks.
