Newburgh, NY- The Mount Saint Mary's Men's Golf team took on Yeshiva University today at the Powelton Country Club in what can only be described as a "scorcher". The fairways were in immaculate condition, and greens were a little stiff, even with the sun bearing down the Knights opened their season with a win.
Freshman Gabe Hill shot a 75 and led the team to victory. This is the first time in Mount Saint Mary's history that a freshman has won his first start in his first match. That alone is an amazing story. But the fact that he did it with borrowed clubs that he had never swung is what made Hill's score truly incredible.
Hill spent the prior evening cleaning his clubs and preparing the night before for his first collegiate match. Preparations in the morning had him out early and clubs in the driveway ready to go. Then DISASTER. Gabe's clubs were accidentally backed over by a car.
Coach Crane after the match said, "I am really proud of Gabe, winning in his first college start is absolutely special but winning after your clubs are run over and you have to borrow the coach's clubs is Disney storybook stuff."
The most amazing part is that both Gabe and Coach Crane are left-handed. It was fantastic luck that not only was the coach able to provide a loaner set of clubs, but to have them left-handed was even more amazing.
This achievement does not take away from the amazing work the other members of the team did Trevor Zamudio shot a 79, John Del Bene-80, Matthew Ropiak-85, and Jonathan Kara shot a 87.
"This was a great way for us to start off the year. Really proud of everybody and how they fought through the heat." Said Coach Crane.
Next up for the Knights is the Mount Saint Mary College Invitational on September 15. Come out and support the men at the Powelton Country Club.
