Softball Drops Skyline Conference Set Against Farmingdale State

Knights fall twice in extra innings

Farmingdale, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team dropped its Skyline Conference doubleheader with Farmingdale State on Wednesday, falling twice in extra innings. The Knights were edged 5-3 in 10 innings in game one before dropping a 12-2 decision in eight innings to close out the day.
 
Wednesday's sweep drops Mount Saint Mary to 15-17 overall and 8-6 in Skyline Conference play, while Farmingdale State runs its winning streak to 15 games and improves to 19-8 overall and 11-1 in league play.
 
Game 1: Farmingdale State 5 – Mount Saint Mary 3 (F/10)
How It Happened
  • The Rams jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning.
  • Brooke Walker drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly before Angelina Capuano scampered home on a wild pitch to close out the scoring in the inning.
  • The two-run advantage stood until the home half of the seventh when the Knights got the game even.
  • Dana Donnelly (Yulan, N.Y.), Riley Norwood (East Haven, Conn.) and Kaeli McAnally (Bays Shore, N.Y.) recorded consecutive singles to start the frame for the Knights with Donnelly scoring the team's first run on McAnally's safety.
  • Following a pop out, Rory Littman (Rancho Cordova, Calif.) delivered McAnally with the tying run on a groundout.
  • Neither team would score until the tenth frame when Farmingdale State put three runs on the board in the top of the inning.
  • Jenna Giliberti singled home the go ahead run in the inning and scored what proved to be the game winning run on a single from Capuano.
  • The Rams got an insurance run with two outs in the inning when Walker shot a run scoring single to left field.
  • Mount Saint Mary got a run on the board in the bottom of the tenth on a two-out single from Samantha Bendig (Tampa, Fla) that chased home McAnally, but would be unable to get any closer.
For The Knights
  • Donnelly and Norwood each finished the opener 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Knights.
  • Bendig recorded a hit and drove in her team leading 14th run of the year.
  • Olivia Ferara (Middletown, N.Y.), Laura Dentato (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and McAnally all singled with McAnally adding a run and an RBI.
  • Bridget Morris (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) suffered the loss in the circle, working a complete game and allowing four earned runs on seven hits. Morris fanned seven and walked five in the outing.
 
Game 2: Farmingdale State 12 – Mount Saint Mary 2 (F/8)
How It Happened
  • Game two was scoreless until the top of the third when the Rams scratched out their first run of the game on an error and a bunt that delivered Gilberti with the game's first run.
  • Farmingdale State pushed in front 2-0 in the top of the sixth inning when Gilberti, who led off the inning with a single, came home on a wild pitch.
  • Mount Saint Mary cut its deficit in half in the home half of the sixth after Littman led off the frame with a single and was chased home on a double off the bat of Jenna Cedeno (Staten Island, N.Y.).
  • For the second straight game, the Mount got the game tied in the seventh when  Littman shot a single to center field with one out in the inning that pushed home McAnally with the game's tying run.
  • Farmingdale State erupted for 10 runs in the top of the eighth inning to break the game open, taking advantage of five hits and three Mount Saint Mary miscues.
  • Five straight batters reached with one out in the inning producing the inning's first five runs.
  • Mount Saint Mary placed a runner on in the bottom of the inning, but was unable to advance it to scoring position.
 
For The Knights
  • Littman finished game two 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
  • Cedeno doubled and drove in a run for the Knights.
  • Ferara finished 2-for-4 with a double.
  • McAnally drew a walk and scored a run.
  • Norwood, Paige Shrimpton (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and Sofia Gannon (East Patchogue, N.Y.) each finished with a hit.
  • Grace MacDonald (Concord, N.H.) suffered the loss in the circle, striking out six in 7.1 innings of work.
 
What's Next
  • Mount Saint Mary begins the final weekend of the regular season on Saturday when it travels to Purchase.
