Knights Take Elimination Game From St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn

Knights meet top seed Manhattanville later Friday afternoon

Purchase, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team earned another game in the 2023 Skyline Conference Championship on Friday with a 5-3 victory over St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. Olivia Ferara (Middletown, N.Y.) homered and drove in the deciding run in the top of the seventh inning.
 
Friday's victory over the Bears improves Mount Saint Mary to 21-18 overall on the season while St. Joseph's-Brooklyn sees its season come to an end at 25-14.
 
How It Happened
  • Mount Saint Mary took a 1-0 lead two pitches into the contest when Ferara blasted her third home run of the season out to left field.
  • The Bears came back with a run in the home half of the first following a leadoff double from Bella Gomez and a run scoring bunt play started by Sofia Logreco.
  • St. Joseph's grabbed its only advantage of the day when it worked three walks and got a single with two outs in the bottom of the second.
  • Arianna Heinsch worked a bases loaded walk with two outs to deliver Maeve McKeon with the go ahead run.
  • The Mount trailed by a run until the top of the fourth inning when an RBI single from Sofia Gannon (East Patchogue, N.Y.) knotted the score at 2-2.
  • Rory Littman (Rancho Cordova, Calif.) singled to start the inning and moved into scoring position on a groundout.
  • With two outs in the inning, Gannon rifled a single to center to chase home Littman with the tying run.
  • The game remained knotted until the top of the seventh when the Mount erupted for three tallies.
  • The Mount put two runners on and with two outs in the inning before Kaeli McAnally (Bay Shore, N.Y.) shot a single down the right field line to push home Laura Dentato (Farmingdale, N.Y.) to give the Knights a 3-2 lead.
  • Ferara followed with a two-run double to right center to give the Knights their final two runs.
  • The Bears would not go quietly in the seventh, getting a run on a Leila Heller double, but Bridget Morris (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) got a fly out to end the threat and keep the Knights' season alive.
 
For The Knights
  • Ferara finished the game 2-for-4 with her team leading third home run, her 11th double of the season, a run scored and three RBI.
  • Littman went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
  • Gannon wrapped up the victory 2-for-3 with an RBI.
  • McAnally went 1-for-2 with a walk, run and an RBI.
  • Morris moved to 12-9 on the season with the complete game victory. She allowed three runs on six hits while fanning five.
 
For The Bears
  • Emily Burroughs finished the contest 2-for-2 with a double.
  • Gomez doubled and scored a run.
  • Heller doubled, walked and drove in a run.
  • Brooke Horn suffered the loss in the circle, working 1.2 innings in relief and allowing three unearned runs on three hits.
 
What's Next
  • Mount Saint Mary takes on top-seeded Manhattanville in its second elimination game of the day at approximately 3:00 p.m.
