Knights Take On Manhattanville, Old Westbury To Round Out Regular Season

Knights in position to clinch berth into Skyline Conference Championship

Newburgh, N.Y. – With a chance to clinch a berth into the 2023 Skyline Conference Championship, the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team plays a pair of important conference games this week to finish off the regular season. The Knights will travel to Manhattanville on Wednesday evening before completing the regular season Saturday afternoon at home against Old Westbury. At A Glance: The Knights enter the final week of the regular season clinging to the final spot in the upcoming conference championship tournament, sitting a game ahead of Old Westbury and two games back of third-place Manhattanville. Mount Saint Mary heads to Manhattanville on Wednesday with a 5-9 overall record and a 2-4 mark in league action.
 
Victoria Ward (Oceanside, N.Y.) leads the offensive attack for the Mount with 37 goals, 18 assists and 55 points. Ward, who ranks sixth in the conference in total goals, also adds 40 draw controls, 14 groundballs and four caused turnovers for the Knights.
 
Karlie Ferrucci (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) is in the midst of a strong all-around season for the Mount, totaling 32 points on the strength of 24 goals and eight assists. Ferrucci leads the team with 50 draw controls, securing a career-high nine draws in three of the last four games, to go along with 29 groundballs and 14 caused turnovers. Ferrucci enters the week ranked 11th in the Skyline Conference in draw controls per game (3.57).
 
Erica Schmidgall (North Massapequa, N.Y.) ranks third on the team with 25 points, scoring 14 times and assisting on 11 other goals, while adding 10 groundballs and four draw controls. Antonia Licardi (Pine Bush, N.Y.) has registered 13 goals and 19 points to date while Shannon McGowan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) has tallied 11 times and caused five turnovers.
 
Carolyn Del Debbio (Southington, Conn.) supports the offense with four goals and four assists to go along with 17 draw controls with Ella Garner (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) tallying nine goals while adding 14 groundballs, eight caused turnovers and five draw controls.
 
Kate Crooker (Boonton, N.J.) helps anchor the defensive effort for the Knights, leading the team with 24 caused turnovers to go along with 32 groundballs, 21 draw controls and nine points on offense. Maggie Horan (Stony Point, N.Y.) has secured 25 groundballs and forced 17 miscues with freshman Briana Fassett (New Milford, Conn.) checking in with 18 caused turnovers and 19 groundballs.
 
In goal, Liz Petrellese (Levittown, N.Y.) has made 145 saves, the second highest total in the conference, and is working to a .434 save percentage and a 13.50 goals against average. Petrellese leads the Mount in groundballs with 50 on the season.
 
A Look At Manhattanville: The Valiants have won their last four outings, including a 15-3 victory over Old Westbury on Tuesday, and enter Wednesday's tilt at 11-3 overall and 4-2 in Skyline Conference play.
 
Manhattanville's offensive attack features three players with at least 40 goals on the year, led by 45 from Marisa D'Angelo. D'Angelo adds 12 assists for 57 points and chips in 24 groundballs and 10 caused turnovers.
 
Kerry Carr begins the week with 44 goals and 58 points and adds 27 groundballs, 18 caused turnovers and 55 draw controls. Maura Kelly has potted 40 goals and paces Manhattanville with 19 assists and 59 points while securing 31 groundballs, causing 15 caused turnovers and winning 56 draws.
 
Abbey Playle leads the way for Manhattanville with 46 groundballs, 19 caused turnovers and 64 draw controls and chips in four goals and three assists.
 
Britney Sirota has seen all the action in goal to date for the Valiants and has turned aside 119 opponent shots to date. Sirota holds a .513 save percentage and an 8.07 goals against average to go along with 23 groundballs and two caused turnovers.
 
Recent History: The Knights and Valiants will meet for the seventh time since 2014 on Wednesday with Manhattanville winning four of the previous six meetings. Manhattanville has won each of the last three matchups, with the Knights last win in the series coming in a 14-13 home victory on March 22, 2016.
 
Scouting Old Westbury: Following Tuesday's loss to Manhattanville, Old Westbury has dropped its last six decisions and heads to Maritime on Wednesday sporting a 2-7 overall record and a 1-5 mark in Skyline Conference play.
 
Nicole Abalco leads the offense for the Panthers with 12 goals and 14 points through nine games, adding 22 groundballs and team-highs in caused turnovers with 18 and draw controls with 18. Jessica Pedroza chips in six goals and seven points to go along with 14 groundballs and 15 forced miscues.
 
Kathleen Mackey, who leads the team with 30 groundballs, has seen all the action in goal to date for Old Westbury and has stopped128 shots while posting a .536 save percentage and a 11.71 goals against average.
 
Recent History: The two teams have played seven times since the start of 2013 season prior to Saturday's contest with the Knights holding a slim 4-3 advantage in the series. Saturday's game will be the first between the Knights and the Panthers since April 3, 2019, a 17-13 victory for Old Westbury at Kaplan Field.
 
What's Next: The 2023 Skyline Conference Championship opens on Tuesday, May 2 with two First Round games at the highest seed.
