Knights Have Winning Streak Stopped At Western Connecticut

Bendig, Gannon rip doubles for the Knights

Danbury, Conn. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team saw its four-game winning streak stopped on Thursday following tight 2-1 and 4-1 losses at Western Connecticut. Samantha Bendig (Tampa, Fla.) recorded two hits in the opener with Sofia Gannon (East Patchogue, N.Y.) doubling in game two.
 
Thursday's sweep drops Mount Saint Mary to 9-11 overall on the season through 20 games, while the Wolves improve to 16-14.
 
Game 1: Western Connecticut 2 – Mount Saint Mary 1
How It Happened
  • Mount Saint Mary struck first in the opener, plating its only run of the game in the top of the first inning.
  • Following a leadoff single from Olivia Ferara (Middletown, N.Y.), who was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, Bendig laced a one-out double to left center t push Ferara home.
  • Following the first inning, the Mount recorded just two more hits and would not move a runner into scoring position.
  • The Wolves broke through with their two runs in the home half of the third.
  • Two infield singles to start the inning and a one-out base hit from Sydney Chenoweth loaded the bases for the Wolves.
  • Carly Cordove drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly with Isabella Pincince crossing with an unearned run following a throwing error to close out the scoring in the game.
 
For The Knights
  • Bendig finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, recording half of the Mount's four hits in the game.
  • Ferara singled and scored her 14th run of the season.
  • Sophia Reed (Rockaway, N.J.) picked up the Mount's other hit in the contest.
  • Bridget Morris (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) suffered the loss in the circle and fell to 5-5 on the season. She surrendered one earned run on 10 hits and fanned seven against just one walk.
 
Game 2: Western Connecticut 4 – Mount Saint Mary 1
How It Happened
  • In game two it was Western Connecticut's turn to grab an early lead, scoring three times over the first two innings.
  • Alexis Resto scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first before Benni Tucci pushed a run across with a bunt and the Wolves tacked on a second run following a Knights' miscue.
  • Western Connecticut pushed its lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning when Madison Vanderploeg shot a two-out single through the middle that delivered Amber Roggendorf with the team's final run of the game.
  • Trailing by four runs in the sixth inning, the Mount took advantage of an error ahead of a run scoring double off the bat of Gannon that pushed Jenna Cedeno across with the team's only run of the contest.
 
For The Knights
  • Cedeno finished the contest with a single and a run scored for the Knights.
  • Gannon ripped her third double of the year and drove in her third run of the season.
  • Ferara, Bendig, and Riley Norwood (East Haven, Conn.) all finished with a hit for the Mount.
  • Grace MacDonald (Concord, N.H.) suffered the loss in game two, allowing just one earned run on five hits in 3.2 innings. MacDonald struck out two batters and did not allow a walk.
  • Dana Donnelly (Yulan, N.Y.) came on to work 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, striking out two batters.
 
What's Next
  • Mount Saint Mary begins a busy conference weekend on Saturday when it plays host to Manhattanville.
