Mazzarelli’s 5 Goals Drive Knights to First Victory

| By:
Newburgh, NY- The week started off with Rocket League taking on D'Youville University. The Saints have had an impressive season to this point, sitting at 4th in the conference currently, while MSMC sits in 8th. The standings didn't stand a chance at predicting the outcome of this match though, as the Knights would go on to win the series 3 games to 0 in convincing fashion.

D'youville got on the board first in game 1 less than 2 minutes in, but the early deficit wouldn't last long. With 1:38 left in regulation Marco Mazzarelli was able to equalize, with some brilliant contributions in the buildup from both Ryan Alvarado and Bob Houk. The Knights took control of the game from that point on, and wouldn't concede a goal for the res of the gameplay. With only seconds left before overtime, Bob Houk found himself with a shot on target on an empty net, but in heartbreaking fashion the shot clipped the crossbar and landed inches in front of the goal, sending us to sudden death. Despite the shades of the game 1 defeat against Utica, MSMC was able to maintain their composure, and 16 seconds into overtime Ryan found a wide open Marco with a cross to score the game winner.

Game 2 was a defensive masterpiece, with the Knights holding on to a 1-0 victory, and earning the first clean sheet in program history. Ryan Alvarado scored the games only goal with 2:53 remaining, drilling a ball off the corner wall from Marco into the back of the net. The clean sheet didn't come easy for the Knights, as D'Youville put 9 shots on target over the course of the game. Bob Houk chalked up 6 saves in the win, a season high, to put the Knights a single game away from their first series win of the season.

Game 3 started at a frantic pace, with D'youville getting their first goal since the beginning of game 1, after an unfortunate demolition on Ryan Alvarado left the Knights net empty. It took less than 30 seconds to equalize this time though, as Marco continued his hot streak in front of net, and brought us back to square 1 with 3:59 remaining. The back-and-forth contest continued with D'Youville scoring a second all the way from midfield, only for Marco to score the Knights second of the game after a favorable bounce off a defender. Exactly 20 seconds later, Ryan Alvarado had an incredible arial, flicking the ball into the top corner of the net, and putting the Knights ahead with 2:29 remaining. The high scoring affair wasn't over yet, as the Saints sneaking a ball into the bottom corner of the net with 52 seconds remaining. Marco Mazzarelli called ballgame with 27 seconds to go, sending a ball all of the way from the Knights own goal into the back of D'Youville's net. Another 30 seconds of sound defense from the Knights, and their first victory of the season, and in team history, was secured.

The progress Rocket League has made in the last 6 weeks has been astounding, and they are primed for a strong finish to the Fall season, and an even bigger splash come Spring.
