Newburgh, NY- The week kicked off on Monday with a doubleheader for Rocket League. First up was a meeting with Utica University, serving as the rubber match between the two programs across all titles. Utica jumped out to an early 2 game lead on the Knights. Game 3 started off to a different tune, with an early goal from
Ryan Alvarado and a second from
Bob Houk the Knights were in control heading down to the wire. With time expiring on the clock and a 2-1 lead, the Knights were inches away from securing the 3
rd game of the series, but the ball made it into the net just before touching the ground to bring the game to overtime. Utica would score the game and series winner after 30 seconds of overtime. It was a heartbreaking loss to start the day, but the team maintained their composure heading into their second series of the day.
The NYIT CyBears were the opposition for the 2
nd series of the doubleheader, and served as the ECC Game of the Week, broadcast by EsportsU. Game 1 ended with a score of 3-0 in favor of NYIT. The Knights tied the series in game 2 though, winning 3-2 after an incredible redirection from
Marco Mazzarelli at the end of a
Bob Houk cross. This was the first game win for MSMC Rocket League, and an important milestone in the development of the team! NYIT went on to win games 3 and 4 by scores of 3-0 and 5-1 respectively, but there was fight until the very end.
Smash continued their regular season against St. Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday night, where they fell 2 games to 0.
Erik Albanese had another impressive performance, taking 7 stocks in game 1 and 6 in game 2, but the well-rounded Spartans roster was too much. Singles bracket continued as well, and Erik moved to 3-0 in his group with a win over Southern New Hampshire University's "el jefe", the 8
th ranked player in all of New Hampshire.
League of Legends closed out the week on Friday night with a match against the College of Staten Island, and was also the ECC Match of the week for League. In an incredibly challenging match on paper, the Knights held even with the Dolphins strong roster for 20 minutes, where CSI took Baron Nashor and were able to end the game shortly after. Game 2 was challenging, as CSI were able to snowball an early advantage on the top side of the map to another game win, and the series win.
Samuel Guardiola was involved in 83% of the Knights kills across the series, which as the team's jungler and main shotcaller is exactly what you want to see.
