Swimming Travels To USMMA Wednesday

Knights to take on Mariners, Privateers

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's and Women's Swimming teams continue Skyline Conference competition Wednesday evening when they travel to the United States Merchant Marine Academy to take on the host Mariners and Maritime. Events are scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. with Live Video available for those unable to attend.
 
MSMC Men At A Glance: The Knights opened 2023 on Saturday, suffering a hard fought 97-72 non-conference loss at William Paterson. Saturday's defeat dropped the Mount to 2-3 overall in dual meet competition.
 
Joseph Tagliareni (Hackettstown, N.J.) picked up where he left off before the break with victories in the 200-yard individual medley, 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard breaststroke for the Knights. His IM win came in a time of 2:11.81 before he topped the field in the backstroke and breaststroke events in 58.74 seconds and 1:11.39, respectively. 

Tyler Williams (Middlebury, Conn.) and Jackson Lerner (Bayside, N.Y.) each finished the day with a win and a runner-up finish against the Pioneers. Williams won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:49.64 before taking second in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:47.68. 

Lerner picked up a victory on Saturday in the 50-yard freestyle and took the second position for the Knights in the 100-yard freestyle. His 50-yard victory came in 24.16 seconds before he claimed runner-up points in the 100-yard race in 54.26 seconds. 

Atticus Salazar (Queens, N.Y.) picked up a third place finish for the Knights on Saturday, posting a time of 2:31.76 in the 200-yard freestyle. 
 
MSMC Women At A Glance: The Mount Saint Mary Women's team was clipped on Saturday at William Paterson in its first meet of 2023 by a score of 97-73.
 
Kristen Dwight (Newfield, N.J.) posted a time of 2:22.28 in the 200-yard freestyle race, claiming second place for the Mount and went on to post a score of 153.80 in winning the 1-meter diving competition for the Mount, becoming the first Knight ever to compete in a diving event.

Grace MacHugh (Newburgh, N.Y.) scored the Mount's lone victories on the day in the swimming events, winning the 1,000-yard freestyle race in a time of 12:06.11 and the 500-yard freestyle event in a time of 5:51.67. 

Kitty Masayda (Watertown, Conn.) turned in a strong day with runner-up finishes for the Knights in both the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly. Masayda's IM finish came in 2:33.29 before a showing of 1:09.92 in the butterfly race. 

Emily Gursky (Oakville, Conn.) completed the day with a second place finish in the 100-yard freestyle and a third place finish in the 200-yard individual medley. Her runner-up time was 1:03.13 and she followed Masayda in the IM race with a time of 2:42.31. 

Stefanie Sommer (Monroe, N.Y.) also picked a second place and third place finish for the Knights on Saturday. She completed the 100-yard backstroke in second place in 1:11.57 and took the third position in the 50-yard freestyle, touching out in 28.60 seconds. 
 
Weekly Honors: Following her two victories on Saturday, MacHugh was named the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week. MacHugh became the third Knight to be named the league's Rookie of the Week this season and picked up her second honor of the year following her Swimming of the Week award on November 8.
 
What's Next: The Knights close out the dual meet schedule on Saturday when they host Purchase and John Jay on Senior Day.
