Women’s Tennis Travels To Hartwick For Season Opener

Knights welcome back two All-Skyline Conference performers in 2022

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team opens the 2022 season on Saturday afternoon with a road non-conference match at Hartwick. Saturday's match, which is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., is the first of four straight on the road for the Knights to begin the fall.

A Look Back: Mount Saint Mary concluded the 2021-22 season with a 6-8 overall record and a 2-4 mark in Skyline Conference play.

Who's Back: Mount Saint Mary welcomes back four players from last season's team, highlighted by All-Conference selections Julia Flynn (Naugatuck, Conn.) and Carly Green (Holbrook, N.Y.).

Playing primarily at second singles, Flynn recorded six wins for the Knights and opened the season with six straight victories on her way to being named Second Team All-Skyline Conference.

Green had a breakout season in her second campaign for the Knights, going 8-5, primarily at the third singles slot, earning Second Team All-League honors. Green collected a trio of Skyline Conference victories and teamed with Flynn for three victories at the top doubles flight.

Victoria Valencia (Floral Park, N.Y.) returns for her second season at the Mount after producing three victories a season ago. Valencia, who added seven victories playing at the second doubles position, saw her season cut short in 2021-22 due to injury.

Blanca Ayala Santana (Port Jervis, N.Y.) scored a victory for the Mount at the sixth position last season and added four appearances in doubles competition for the Knights.

Newcomers: Victoria Veloz-Vicioso (Englewood, N.J.) and Sadie McNair (Newburgh, N.Y.) enter the mix in 2022-23 for their first seasons with the Knights.

Veloz Vicioso, who also competes for the Mount's Track and Field teams, competed for four years in high school at Immaculate Conception. McNair, a local product from Newburgh Free Academy, competed for six seasons on the varsity squad at NFA. She was a five-time county and sectional qualifier and also qualified for the state tournament while with the Goldbacks.

A Look At Hartwick: The Hawks opens the 2022 season on Friday against cross-town rival Oneonta. Hartwick posted a 12-4 record in 2021-22, including a sweep of the Knights in Newburgh on April 10.

Recent History: The Knights and Hawks have met three times since 2017 with the Hawks collecting a pair of wins. The Mount's triumph came in a 9-0 victory at home on October 1, 2019.

The Schedule: Following Saturday's season opener, the Mount will play three more contests on the road to start the year, including the conference opener at Yeshiva on September 15.

The Mount begins the home schedule on September 17 against Bard and also plays host to Utica (9/21), Purchase (10/5) and Sarah Lawrence (10/22).

The four-team Skyline Conference Championship begins on October 26 with the champion crowned on October 29.
