Women’s Tennis Travels To Yeshiva Tuesday, Hosts Bard Saturday

Knights earned first win of the season on Sunday

Newburgh, N.Y. – After collecting its first win of the season on Sunday afternoon, the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team is set for a pair of matches this week. The Knights close out a four-match road swing and open Skyline Conference play when they head to Yeshiva on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) before opening the home schedule with a non-conference match against Bard on Saturday morning (11:00 a.m.).

At A Glance: The Knights begin conference competition on Tuesday with a 1-2 overall record. After suffering non-conference losses to Hartwick and Western Connecticut, the Mount battled its way to a hard fought 5-4 victory at Russell Sage on Sunday afternoon.

Carly Green (Holbrook, N.Y.) and Sadie McNair (Newburgh, N.Y.) each lead the team with a pair of singles victories in the early going. Green holds a 2-1 record, winning one match at both the second and top positions. McNair has earned an identical 2-1 singles record for the Mount, earning victories at the second and fourth slots.

In doubles action, McNair has picked up two more wins and has joined Victoria Valencia (Floral Park, N.Y.) for a 2-1 record at the second flight. Victoria Veloz-Vicioso (Englewood, N.J.) and Blanca Ayala Santana have also earned a doubles victory and hold a 1-1 record at the third position.

Scouting Yeshiva: The Maccabees enter Tuesday's tilt with an 0-1 record both overall and in conference play. Yeshiva dropped its season opener to Farmingdale State before its match with Purchase on September 11 was suspended due to weather.

Sarah Leiderman scored the win for the Maccabees in an 8-1 loss to Rams, fighting her way to a 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) win at the sixth position.

Recent History: The Knights and Macs will meet for the 17th time since the start of the 2007 season, with the Mount posting a 10-6 record in the previous 16 matches. The Mount won seven straight decisions from 2007-13 and after dropping the next six meetings have won the three contests. Most recently, the Knights scored a 5-4 victory in Newburgh on October 5, 2021.

Previewing Bard: The Raptors enter a midweek match with Union at 1-1 after falling to Hartwick and edging Russell Sage.

Paige Houghton and Victoria Bagatcholon each produced a pair of wins over the Gators, with Houghton joining Bella Reis at second doubles for a win before scoring an individual victory at fourth singles. Bagatcholon teamed with Lexi Sanchez for a third doubles win and added a sixth singles triumph, while Nico Gusac cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at the top singles flight.

Recent History: The old Skyline Conference rivals have also met 16 times since 2007 with the Knights holding a 10-6 record. The Knights stopped a three-match losing skid to Bard with a 7-2 triumph on the road on September 17, 2021.
