Women’s Lacrosse Clipped By Manhattanville On Senior Day

Shalvey totals 10 points, Petrellese makes 21 saves

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team suffered a 16-12 Skyline Conference loss to Manhattanville Saturday afternoon on Senior Day in the 2022 finale. Megan Shalvey (Blauvelt, N.Y.) closed out her career with a 10-point performance, while freshman Liz Petrellese (Levittown, N.Y.) made a career-high 21 saves.
 
Saturday's loss closes Mount Saint Mary at 8-7 overall and 1-6 in Skyline Conference play. The Knights finish the season with the most wins in a season and their first winning season since going 8-7 in 2014.
 
How It Happened
  • A tightly contested first 30 minutes saw the two teams head into halftime deadlocked at 7-7.
  • Mount Saint Mary scored two of the first three goals of the game, before Manhattanville tallied the final two goals in the last 3:09 of the first quarter to take a 3-2 lead after 15 minutes.
  • Shalvey knotted the score at 3-3 with her second goal of the game early in the second frame, before a three-goal run pushed the Knights in front 6-4.
  • Karlie Ferrucci (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) started the run with her second of the game with Shalvey pushing the Knights in front 5-4 with her third of the afternoon. Erica Schmidgall (North Massapequa, N.Y.) closed the spurt with a tally with the player-advantage at the 6:12 mark of the second stanza.
  • The visitors countered with a three-goal run of their own, with Lara Keenan scoring twice just 27 seconds apart. Ally Petricca moved the Valiants back in front 7-6 with 2:56 left before the break.
  • Victoria Ward (Oceanside, N.Y.) got the Knights back on level terms in the final minute, knotting the score with just 49 seconds left before halftime.
  • The third quarter produced a pair of three-goals runs as the teams entered the final 15 minutes knotted at 10-10.
  • Mount Saint Mary surged to a 10-7 lead following goals from Annie Dolan (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), Ashley Giorgi (Danbury, Conn.) and Shalvey over the first six-and-a-half minutes of the third frame.
  • Manhattanville stormed back with the next three goals, including the equalizer from Maura Kelly with 29 seconds left in the period.
  • Shalvey scored her fifth goal of the game to open the scoring in the fourth to give the Knights an 11-10 advantage.
  • The Valiants answered again with the next six goals, including two each from Keenan and Marisa D'Angelo, to take the lead for good in the game.
  • Shalvey got back into the scoring column with 2:23 left in regulation time to close out the scoring in the game and bring the Knights to within the final 16-12 deficit.
 
For The Knights
  • Shalvey became just the fourth player in program history to record at least 10 points in a contest and the first since Katie Gattoni recorded 11 on April 30, 2016. Shalvey closed the day with six goals and four assists, adding one draw control.
  • Ferrucci registered two goals, caused two turnovers and won two draws for the Knights.
  • Ward posted a goal and an assist, adding a groundball and two caused turnovers.
  • Schmidgall scored once and matched the team-high with three groundballs.
  • Kate Crooker (Boonton, N.J.) collected three groundballs and caused a turnover.
  • Maggie Horan (Stony Point, N.Y.) secured three groundballs.
  • Jackie Lindsay (Baldwin, N.Y.) won eight draw controls for the Knights, chipping in a caused turnover and a groundball.
  • Petrellese finished with at least 10 saves in a game for the sixth time, registering a career-high 21 stops for the Knights. She closes out her rookie season with 132 stops.
 
For The Valiants
  • Keenan and D'Angelo each finished with five points, with Keenan scoring four times and helping on another goal and D'Angelo potting five goals. Keenan added four draw controls in the win for the visitors.
  • Kelly finished with three goals and an assist, adding five groundballs and six draws.
  • Kerry Carr scored once and added an assist to go along with seven draw controls and four groundballs.
  • Kasey Molito caused four turnovers, secured a groundball and won a draw.
  • Britney Sirota earned the win in goal with five saves.
 
Game Statistics
  • Manhattanville finished the contest with a 49-21 advantage in shots.
  • The Valiants held a slim 20-17 edge in groundballs.
  • Manhattanville controlled the draw control battle, 20-12.
