Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team picked up a 9-1 victory over Old Westbury Tuesday afternoon to advance to the double-elimination portion of the 2022 Skyline Conference Championship.
Samantha Bendig (Tampa, Fla.) homered in the victory for the Knights and
Bridget Morris (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) earned her ninth victory of the season in the circle.
Mount Saint Mary improved to 20-16 on the season and earned its 16
th straight victory over Old Westbury.
How It Happened
- Mount Saint Mary jumped in front early on Tuesday, plating a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first.
- Following a walk to Olivia Ferara (Middletown, N.Y.), Laura Dentato (Farmingdale, N.Y.) reached on an error to give the Knights two bases runners with one out. Both runners crossed following a dropped fly ball with two outs in the inning.
- The two-run advantage held until the Knights broke the game open with five tallies in the bottom of the fourth.
- Bendig connected on her team leading fifth home run of the season to lead off the inning, giving the Knights a 3-0 cushion.
- Alicia Killeen (Nesconset, N.Y.) walked with the bases loaded to push home a run and Ferara followed with a sacrifice fly that delivered Riley Norwood (East Haven, Conn.) for a 5-0 advantage.
- Jenna Cedeno (Staten Island, N.Y.) forced home another run with a bases loaded walk and Bendig was hit by a pitch to drive in the final run of the inning and give the Knights a 7-0 advantage.
- Old Westbury got its only run of the contest in the top of the fifth when it took advantage of two hits and a pair of walks. Rosanna Cuttone shot a single through the right side to deliver Natilie Intrieri to cut the Mount's lead to 7-1.
- Mount Saint Mary got the run back in the bottom of the inning when Melanie McClinchey (Medford, N.Y.) scored on a double steal attempt.
- The Knights closed the game early in the sixth when Sofia Gannon (East Patchogue, N.Y.) singled up the middle to deliver Jessica Ehret (Broad Channel, N.Y.) with the game's final run.
For The Knights
- Mount Saint Mary outhit Old Westbury 9-4 in the contest.
- Bendig wrapped up the victory 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. She pushed her team-high RBI total to 24 in the victory.
- Gannon finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
- Killeen, Ferara, Dentato and McClinchey all closed the day with a hit and a run scored with McClinchey scoring twice.
- Morris moved to 9-8 on the season in the win, working the first 4.1 innings, allowing a run on three hits. She fanned eight, collecting her 100th strikeout of the season in 96.1 innings of work.
- Christen Hansen (Cypress, Calif.) recorded the final five outs, allowing just one hit.

- The Knights advance to the double-elimination portion of the championship to be played at Farmingdale State. The Knights will meet second seed Manhattanville on Thursday with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
