Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team earned a split in its first conference action of the season on Saturday, dropping game one at Manhattaville 5-2 before rallying for a 5-4 victory in game two.
Riley Norwood (East Haven, Conn.) finished the second contest with a pair of hits for the Knights.
The game two victory stopped a seven-game skid for the Knights and moves them to 2-9 overall on the season and 1-1 in Skyline Conference play. Manhattanville stands at 7-11 overall and 3-1 in league play.
Game 1: Manhattanville 5 – Mount Saint Mary 2
How It Happened
- The Valiants opened a 1-0 lead in the first when Sarah Harker drove in the game's first run with a single.
- Mount Saint Mary evened the score in the second when Jenna Cedeno (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove in Norwood with a single.
- Manhattanville answered with two more runs in the bottom of the second to grab a 3-1 lead with Samantha Walsh and Giovanna Liggett delivering runs with base hits.
- The Knights got a run closer in the fourth on an Alicia Killeen (Nesconset, N.Y.) sacrifice fly.
- Manhattanville closed out the scoring in the game with single runs in the fourth and fifth.
- Liggett drove in another run in the fourth and Melissa Lopez doubled home Harker with the game's final run.
For The Knights
- Killeen finished the opener 1-for-3 with an RBI.
- Cedeno recorded a hit, scored a run and drove in one for the Knights.
- Olivia Ferara (Middletown, N.Y.) and Melanie McClinchey (Medford, N.Y.) each singled.
- Bridget Morris (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) suffered the loss and fell to 0-4 on the season, allowing three runs in 1.2 innings.
- Christen Hansen (Cypress, Calif.) worked 4.1 innings of relief, allowing two runs on five hits.
Game 2: Mount Saint Mary 5 – Manhattanville 4
How It Happened
- The Valiants scored a single run in the first inning when Walsh scampered home on a miscue following a single from Liggett.
- The one-run lead held up until the fifth when the Mount evened the score when Cedeno singled home Killeen with two-outs in the inning.
- Manhattanville came right back with two runs in the home half of the inning to grab a 3-1 advantage.
- Amaya Esparza supplied the scoring with a one-out, two-run home run.
- Trailing 3-1 in their final at-bat, Mount Saint Mary scored four times on three hits to grab a 5-3 lead.
- Norwood singled home Ferara to start the scoring in the inning before Cedeno scored the tying run on a bases loaded walk drawn by Nicole Rosner (Brewster, N.Y.).
- Sofia Gannon (East Patchogue, N.Y.) pushed the Knights in front with a two-run double that delivered Norwood and Laura Dentato (Farmingdale, N.Y.).
- The Valiants plated a run in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run on third, but Hansen got a groundout to end the contest.
For The Knights
- Norwood finished game two 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI.
- Killeen, Dentato and Gannon all doubled with Killeen and Dentato scoring runs.
- Rosner and Cedeno each posted a hit and an RBI.
- Ferara added a hit and a run scored for the Knights.
- Rosner made the start in the circle and took a no decision after allowing a run on four hits in 3.1 innings.
- Hansen improved to 2-2 on the season, earning the win in 3.2 innings of relief work.
