Mount Saint Mary Sweeps Western Connecticut

Morris fans career-high 14 in game one win

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team won a pair of pitcher's duals on Wednesday, edging Western Connecticut 1-0 in eight innings and 3-2. Bridget Morris (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) picked up the game one victory with a career-high 14 strikeouts.
 
Wednesday's sweep improves Mount Saint Mary to 10-11 overall and gives it six straight victories, while Western Connecticut falls to 10-14 on the season.
 
Game 1: Mount Saint Mary 1 – Western Connecticut 0 (F/8)
How It Happened
  • The two teams went scoreless until the extra frame.
  • Mount Saint Mary was held to just one hit, an infield single from Alicia Killeen (Nesconset, N.Y.), through the first seven innings.
  • Western Connecticut put runners on second and third with two outs in the fifth and one out in the sixth but was unable to push across a run.
  • With the international tie breaker in play in the eighth the Mount got a fly out to right field and Laura Dentato (Farmingdale, N.Y.) cut down the runner trying to advance to third to end the inning.
  • An infield single from Melanie McClinchey (Medford, N.Y.) put runners on the corners with no one out in the bottom of the eighth before Killeen shot a single down the first base line to push across Sofia Gannon (East Patchogue, N.Y.) with the game winning run.
 
For The Knights
  • Killeen picked up two of the team's three hits in the game, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
  • McClinchey accounted for the team's only other hit in the game.
  • Morris worked her second shutout of the season, allowing just two singles in the game. She walked seven, but punched out a career-high 14 West Conn batters.

How It Happened
  • Mount Saint Mary got on the board first, plating a run in the bottom of the second on a run scoring double off the bat of Samantha Bendig (Tampa, Fla.).
  • West Conn came back with single runs in the third and fourth to grab their first lead of the day. Jordan Carbone laid down a sacrifice bunt that delivered a run in the third and Jillian Komornik singled home a run in the fourth.
  • Mount Saint Mary quickly tied the score at 2-2 when Jenna Cedeno (Staten Island, N.Y.) connected on her first career home run with one out in the fourth to tie the score at 2-2.
  • The Knights went on to score the deciding run in the bottom of the fifth when Cedeno singled home Killeen with one out in the inning.
 
For The Knights
  • Cedeno finished game two 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and a pair of RBI.
  • Bendig went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
  • Killeen collected another hit in game two and scored a run.
  • Nicole Rosner (Brewster, N.Y.) worked the first 3.2 innings in the circle, allowing two runs and striking out five.
  • Christen Hansen (Cypress, Calif.) picked up the win in relief, getting the final 10 outs and striking out two to move to 6-2 on the season.
 
What's Next
  • Mount Saint Mary returns to Skyline Conference play on Thursday when it plays host to Purchase.
  • West Conn hosts the University of Saint Joseph on Thursday.
