Swimming Opens Diamond City Invitational Friday Evening

Three-day event begins Friday

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's and Women's Swimming team return to action this weekend when they travel to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. to take part in the three-day Diamond City Invitational hosted by King's (Pa.). The event opens Friday evening with the 200-yard medley relay and the 1,650-yard freestyle.
 
MSMC Men At A Glance: The Knights are coming off a tight 70-64 Skyline Conference victory over Purchase on Saturday afternoon. The win evened the Mount's record at 2-2 overall and improved its league record to 1-0.
 
Jackson Lerner (Bayside, N.Y.) finished a strong weekend for the Mount with wins over the Panthers in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly. He opened the day with a winning effort of 2:10.34 in the freestyle race before touching out in a time of 1:01.86 in the butterfly event.
 
Joseph Tagliareni supported the Mount's win on Saturday with first place finishes in both the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard backstroke. The IM swim was completed in 2:13.76 before he topped the field in the backstroke event in 1:00.77.
 
Tyler Williams (Middlebury, Conn.) also scored a pair of victories for the Knights, scoring first place points in both the 500-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke. The 500-yard swim was completed in a winning time of 5:55.27 before he took the top spot in the breaststroke race in 1:27.37.
 
Christopher Astacio (Bronx, N.Y.) also turned in a solid day for the Knights, taking the third position in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 35.01 seconds.
 
Skyline Conference Honors: For the second straight week, Tagliareni was named the Skyline Conference Swimmer of the Week.
 
MSMC Women At A Glance: The Mount women split a conference tri-meet on Saturday, getting edged by St. Joseph's-L.I. by a score of 93-86 while cruising past Purchase 106-50. The split pushed Mount Saint Mary to 2-4 overall on the season and to 1-2 against league rivals.

For the second straight day Cayla Nicholas (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) swept the sprint freestyle events, taking first place in both the 50 and 100-yard events. The 50-yard victory came in a time of 27.29 seconds before she topped the field in the 100-yard race in 1:02.28.
 
Kitty Masayda (Watertown, Conn.) and Grace MacHugh (Newburgh, N.Y.) finished off strong days for the Knights with each posting a victory and a runner-up finish. Masayda won the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:32.49 before taking second in the 100-yard butterfly, showing a time of 1:10.15. MacHugh scored a win for the Mount in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:00.33 and took second place in both the 100-yard breaststroke and 1,000-yard freestyle in times of 1:20.91 and 12:25.42, respectively.  
 
Stefanie Sommer (Monroe, N.Y.) continued the strong start to her rookie season on Saturday with a win in the 100-yard backstroke and a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle. Sommer's triumph came in a time of 1:08.90 with her third-place swim finishing in 2:20.71.
 
Mount Saint Mary also received strong swims on Saturday from Cheyenne Herold (Newburgh, N.Y.) and Emily Gursky (Oakville, Conn.). Herold took second for the Knights in the 50-yard freestyle in 27.83 seconds and added a third place showing in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:05.19. Gursky picked up a third- place finish for the Mount in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in a time of 1:12.71.
 
Mount Saint Mary opened Saturday's meet in strong fashion with an impressive victory in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Gursky, Masayda, Nicholas and Herold posted a winning time of 2:08.51, clearing the second-place time by just over 20 seconds.
 
Conference Accolades: Following four individual wins in two meets last week, Nicholas scored her first career Skyline Conference Weekly Honor when she was tabbed the league's Rookie of the Week.
 
What's Next: Mount Saint Mary rounds out competition in the first semester on December 2-3 when it takes part in the College of Staten Island Invitational.
