Women’s Swimming Splits Skyline Conference Tri-Meet

Four Knights win individual events

Patchogue, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Swimming team closed out a busy weekend with a split of a Skyline Conference Tri-Meet at St. Joseph's-L.I. Saturday afternoon. Four Knights won events, including two victories from Cayla Nicholas (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), as the Mount fell to St. Joseph's-L.I. in a tight 93-86 decision and toppled Purchase 106-50.
 
For the second straight day Nicholas swept the spring freestyle events, taking first place in both the 50 and 100-yard events. The 50-yard victory came in a time of 27.29 seconds before she topped the field in the 100-yard race in 1:02.28.
 
Kitty Masayda (Watertown, Conn.) and Grace MacHugh (Newburgh, N.Y.) finished off strong days for the Knights with each posting a victory and a runner-up finish. Masayda won the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:32.49 before taking second in the 100-yard butterfly, showing a time of 1:10.15. MacHugh scored a win for the Mount in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:00.33 and took second place in both the 100-yard breaststroke and 1,000-yard freestyle in times of 1:20.91 and 12:25.42, respectively.  
 
Stefanie Sommer (Monroe, N.Y.) continued the strong start to her rookie season on Saturday with a win in the 100-yard backstroke and a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle. Sommer's triumph came in a time of 1:08.90 with her third-place swim finishing in 2:20.71.
 
Mount Saint Mary also received strong swims on Saturday from Cheyenne Herold (Newburgh, N.Y.) and Emily Gursky (Oakville, Conn.). Herold took second for the Knights in the 50-yard freestyle in 27.83 seconds and added a third place showing in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:05.19. Gursky picked up a third- place finish for the Mount in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in a time of 1:12.71.
 
Mount Saint Mary opened Saturday's meet in strong fashion with an impressive victory in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Gursky, Masayda, Nicholas and Herold posted a winning time of 2:08.51, clearing the second-place time by just over 20 seconds.

Saturday's split moves Mount Saint Mary to 2-4 overall on the season and to 1-2 against Skyline Conference opponents. Next up for the Knights is a trip to Scranton, Pa. to take part in the three-day Diamond City Invitational starting on November 18.
