Knights Fall On The Road At Adelphi

Nicholas wins two individual events

Garden City, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Swimming team took to the road Friday afternoon and suffered a 58-26 loss to Division II Adelphi. Freshman Cayla Nicholas (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) led the Mount with a pair of victories in the meet. 

Nicholas dominated the sprint freestyle events on Friday, coming away with victories in both the 50 and 100-yard events. The 50-yard victory came in a time of 27.04 seconds before she topped the field in the 100-yard race with a time of 1:00.63. 

Grace MacHugh (Newburgh, N.Y.), who was named the Skyline Conference Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday, turned in strong swims on Friday in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle races. MacHugh swam to a runner-up finish in both the freestyle events with times of 2:13.99 and 5:56.74, respectively.

Kitty Masayda (Watertown, Conn.) and Stefanie Sommer (Monroe, N.Y.) each finished the day with a second and third place finish. Masayda took the runner-up spot in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:31.71 and added a third place showing in the 100-yard butterfly. Sommer took the second position in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:26.87 to go along with a third place finish in the 100-yard backstroke.

Mount Saint Mary also received strong swims on Friday from Cheyenne Herold (Newburgh, N.Y.) and Emily Gursky (Oakville, Conn.). Herold scored third place points for the Knights in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 27.73 seconds with Gursky taking third place in the 200-yard IM, posting a time of 2:42.20. 

The Knights opened the day with a second place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with the team of Sommer, Masayda, NIcholas and Herold completing the event in a time of 2:02.99. 

Friday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 1-3 overall on the season. Next up for the Knights is a Skyline Conference tri-meet at St. Joseph's-L.I. with Purchase Saturday afternoon.
