Busy Week Begins Friday For Mount Saint Mary Swimming

Knights travel to Adelphi Friday, St. Joseph’s-L.I. Saturday

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's and Women's Swimming teams will be in action Friday and Saturday when they travel to Adelphi to begin the week and then St. Joseph's-L.I. on Saturday. Both teams will swim against Adelphi on Friday and Purchase on Saturday with the women's team also competing against the Golden Eagles.
 
MSMC Men At A Glance: The Mount Saint Mary Men's team suffered its first loss of the season last week at Division II College of Staten Island. Three Knights finished the day with at least one runner-up finish.
 
Jackson Lerner (Bayside, N.Y.) had strong outing for the Knights with second place points in both the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle. The 200-yard swim was completed in 2:10.04 before posting a time of 56.10 seconds in the 100-yard race.
 
Joseph Tagliareni (Hackettstown, N.J.) closed out the day with runner-up finishes for the Mount in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly. Tagliareni touched out with a time of 23.25 seconds in the freestyle event and closed out the butterfly race in 57.67 seconds.
 
Tyler Williams (Middlebury, Conn.) finished off a solid day for the Mount with a second place swim in the 500-yard freestyle and a third place finish in the 200-yard individual medley. Williams swam a time of 5:58.32 in the freestyle and added a time of 2:34.43 in the IM.
 
Atticus Salazar produced third place points for the Mount in the 100-yard backstroke, posting a time of 1:25.55 for the Knights.
 
Weekly Honors: Following his strong day against the Dolphins, Tagliareni scored Skyline Conference Swimmer of the Week honors on Tuesday.
 
MSMC Women At A Glance: The Knights suffered a pair of losses on Saturday, falling on the road at Division II College of Staten Island and to league rival Sarah Lawrence.
 
Grace MacHugh (Newburgh, N.Y.) turned in a strong day on Saturday for the Knights with a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle and a second place showing in the 500-yard freestyle. MacHugh bested the field in the longest event of the meet in a time of 12:24.74 and then took second in the 500-yard race in 6:01.92.
 
Stefanie Sommer (Monroe, N.Y.) also had a big day for the Mount after winning the 100-yard backstroke and taking third in the 100-yard breaststroke. Sommer touched out first in the backstroke race in 1:10.02 and produced a time of 1:26.56 in the breaststroke event.
 
Cayla Nicholas (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), Kristen Dwight (Newfield, N.J.) and Emily Gursky (Oakdale, Conn.) also turned in strong swims for the Mount on Saturday. Nicholas took second in both the 50 and 100-yard freestyle races in times of 26.95 seconds and 1:00.86. Gurskey picked up a second place finish in the 100-yard backstroke and a third place showing in the 200-yard individual medley, while Dwight placed third in the 200-yard freestyle.
 
Knights Sweep: MacHugh and Sommer swept the Skyline Conference Weekly awards on Tuesday with MacHugh named the league's Swimmer of the Week and Sommer tabbed the conference's Rookie of the Week.
 
What's Next: Following Saturday's meet, the Knights will travel to Scranton, Pa. to take part in the three-day Diamond City Invitational beginning November 18.
