Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team kept its chances at a berth into the Skyline Conference Championship alive after battling past Purchase 5-4 on Thursday. The Mount took four of the six singles matches, including
Victoria Valencia (Floral Park, N.Y.) who clinched the victory with a sixth singles win.
The Knights trailed in the match 2-1 after doubles play with Purchase scoring victories at the second and third positions. The Mount earned a top-flight victory with a strong showing from
Julia Flynn (Naugatuck, Conn.) and
Sadie McNair (Newburgh, N.Y.) who battled to an 8-5 victory. The duo collected its third win as a pair and moved its league record to 3-2.
The Knights battled back to even the match at 3-3 with singles victories from
Carly Green (Holbrook, N.Y.) and McNair. McNair picked up her team leading sixth singles win of the year with a 6-3, 6-0 win at the second slot, while Green evened the match with a 6-3, 6-1 fourth singles victory, her fifth of the season.
Purchase regained a 4-3 lead with a first singles victory, before Flynn and Valencia closed out the win with victories at the third and sixth positions. Flynn battled to a 6-4, 7-5 third singles win before Valencia closed out the win, outlasting her opponent 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 at the sixth flight.
Thursday's victory moves the Mount to 4-7 overall and 2-3 in conference play and sets up and key scenario for Saturday's match with Sarah Lawrence. Match time at the MSMC Kaplan Tennis Courts is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
