Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team closed out the 2021 regular season on Saturday with a tightly contested 10-4 loss to the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Senior goalie
Jackie Finkel (Warwick, N.Y.) matched her season-high with 17 saves in her final regular season home game.
In a low scoring first half, the Mariners struck with the first two goals when Reagan Jetter potted two straight just 51 seconds apart eight minutes into the contest. The Knights sliced the deficit in half and got on the board with 8:34 left before halftime when
Ella Garner scored her fourth goal of the season off a feed from
Victoria Ward (Oceanside, N.Y.).
USMMA answered the Garner goal with four straight markers over the final 7:22 of the first period to carry a 6-1 lead into the intermission. Jetter scored her third of the game and Jenna Turrentine scored twice, including a goal with five seconds left in the opening stanza to push the halftime advantage to five.
The Mariners held a 19-2 advantage in shots over the opening 30 minutes, including a 16-1 edge in shots on goal. Draw controls and groundballs went to USMMA as well in the first half 6-2 and 12-5, respectively. Finkel finished the first half with 10 saves for the Knights.
Coming out of the break, the Knights got to within 7-4 after scoring three of the first four goals of the second half. Ward and
Ashley Giorgi (Danbury, Conn.) scored back-to-back goals early in the second frame and after a Jetter marker at 23:02,
Megan Shalvey (Blauvelt, N.Y.) scored her team leading 15
th goal to being the Mount to within three.
Mount Saint Mary would be held off the board over the final 15 minutes of the second half and saw the Mariners stretch its lead to a game-high six goals with the final three tallies of the afternoon. Turrentine scored two more goals and Jetter closed out the scoring in the game with a free-position marker with 4:11 left to play.
Shalvey moved her team lead in goals to 15 with her second half tally on Saturday with Ward leading the offense with a goal and a pair of helpers. Her two assists moved her team leading mark in the category to seven on the season. Ward finished off an impressive day with two groundballs and four draw controls.
Kate Crooker (Selbyville, Del.) led the Mount with four groundballs on the day with
Nicole Cervone (Shirley, N.Y.) and Katelyn DeLorenzo (Southington, Conn.) each posting a caused turnover and a groundball.
Brynn Mulcahy (Wantagh, N.Y.) collected a groundball for the Knights on the day.
The Mariners were led by five goals and six points from Jetter who added two groundballs and six draw controls. Turrentine added four tallies four groundballs, two caused turnovers and a pair of draw controls in the winning effort.
Finkel closed the regular season with 17 more saves on Saturday to go along with a pair of groundballs. Finkel has made 34 stops over the team's last two games and now has 69 stops on the season. Jessica Gamsjager earned the win for USMMA with four stops on the day.
Mount Saint Mary was outshot in the game 34-13 with USMMA holding the advantage in draw controls 12-4 and groundballs 17-12. Mount Saint Mary finished the game 18-for-22 in clearing chances with the Mariners going 16-for-18.
Saturday's loss ends the Mount's regular season with a 1-5 record both overall and in Skyline Conference play.
