Softball Drops Skyline Set To Manhattanville

Knights see six game winning streak end

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team saw its six game winning streak come to an end on Saturday following 11-0 and 10-1 losses to visiting Manhattanville. The Knights were limited to just six hits over the two games with Bridget Morris (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) striking out four batters in game one.
 
Game 1: Manhattanville 11 – Mount Saint Mary 0
The Knights were shutout for the first time in 2021 and were limited to just three singles in the contest. After two scoreless innings, Manhattanville scored twice in the third, three times in the fifth, twice more in the sixth and closed out the scoring in the seventh with the final four runs of the game.
 
The Valiants got all the scoring they would need with a pair of unearned runs in the second and opened a 5-0 lead with three tallies in the top of the fifth. Amaya Esparza started the scoring in the fifth with a two-run home run and Kylie Pester followed with a solo shot to open up the five-run advantage.
 
The sixth inning saw Gio Leggett and Esparza record run scoring base hits and the seventh featured RBI singles from Sarah Harker, Abby Tanuma, Liggett and Jackie Fry.
 
Manhattanville outhit the Mount 16-3 in the opener with four players recording at least two hits. Harker finished 3-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI with Esparza closing a strong day 3-for-4 with a home run, run scored and three RBI.
 
Laura Dentato (Farmingdale, N.Y.), Morgan O'Neill (Little Falls, N.J.), and Lauren Farina (Niskayuna, N.Y.) al singled for the Knights in game one with Nicole Rosner (Brewster, N.Y.) the only other Knight to reach base after drawing the team's only walk of the game.
 
Morris lost for the first time in seven outings after surrendering three earned runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings of work. She struck out four and allowed a pair of walks in the outing. Olivia Ferara (Middletown, N.Y.) allowed six runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings of relief work. Charli Shinstine dominated in the win for Manhattanville, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out 17.
 
Game 2: Manhattanville 10 – Mount Saint Mary 1 (5 innings)
Manhattanville picked up where it left off in game one with a pair of runs in the top of the second in game two. The Knights rallied to cut its deficit in half with its only run of the game in the home half of the frame. Farina led off the second with an inside the park home run, her first round tripper of the season, for the Mount's only tally of the day.
 
Manhattanville came back in the third inning with four more runs and added to its lead with two runs in the fourth and two more runs in the fifth. Fry drove in two runs in the third with a single with Julia Bucci connecting on the team's third home run of the day to push the Vailants in front 6-1.
 
Liggett and Esparza drove in runs with a single and triple, respectively in the fourth before Isela Casillas and Harker delivered runs with singles in the fifth to close out the scoring in the game.
 
The Valiants recorded 13 more hits in game two with Casillas going 3-for-4 with a run and three RBI. Harker recorded two more hits and scored twice with Bucci going 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI.
 
Farina hit the team's eighth home run of the season to account for all the Mount's scoring with Dentato finishing up 1-for-2 with her team leading 12th double of the season. Alicia Killeen (Nesconset, N.Y.) added a single for the Knights.
 
O'Neill suffered the loss in the circle in game two, surrendering 10 hits and striking out one in 4.0 innings. She did not allowed an earned run in falling to 1-1 on the season. Pester picked up the complete game win for the Valiants, allowing just three hits and fanning three in 5.0 innings.
 
At 11-5 overall on the season and 9-4 in Skyline Conference play, the Knights and Valiants will concluded the weekend series on Sunday in Purchase. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
