Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team finished off a four-game sweep of the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday with 9-1 and 6-1 victories. Freshman
Laura Dentato (Farmingdale, N.Y.) drove in four runs over the two games and classmate
Bridget Morris (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) won her fourth straight decision with the game one victory.
Game 1: Mount Saint Mary 9 – Mount Saint Vincent 1 (Five Innings)
The Knights continued their strong offensive performance from Friday on Saturday, scoring nine runs on nine hits to take each of the three Skyline Conference decisions of the series. The Mount plated a run in the first, four in the second and two runs apiece in the fourth and fifth frames to secure the game one win.
Mount Saint Mary got on the board in their first at-bat following a double from Dentato and a single from
Samantha Bendig (Bellmore, N.Y.) that put runners on the corners with one out. Following a walk to
Morgan O'Neill (Little Falls, N.J.) to load the bases,
Lauren Farina (Niskayuna, N.Y.) delivered Dentato with a sacrifice fly for the early 1-0 lead.
The Knights broke the game open in the second, scoring four runs on just two hits as they took advantage of an error and a walk in the frame.
Alicia Killeen (Nesconset, N.Y.) scored an unearned run to start the scoring in the inning, followed by a two-run triple from Dentato and a sacrifice fly from Bendig to put the Knights in front 5-0.
The lead grew to 7-0 in the fourth on an RBI single from Dentato that delivered Sophia Gannon (East Patchogue, N.Y.) and a run scoring double from Bendig and reached 9-0 following a two-run single in the fifth off the bat of Gannon that delivered Killeen and
Riley Norwood (East Haven, Conn.).
Mount Saint Mary out hit the Dolphins 9-2 in the opener with Dentato going 3-fo-3 with a double, triple, three runs scored and three RBI. Bendig finished up 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI with Gannon recording a hit and a pair of runs driven in. Killeen scored twice and joined
Melanie McClinchey (Medford, N.Y.) with a hit and run scored in the contest.
Morris dominated the Dolphins, allowing just two singles and a pair of walks in the game as she improved to 5-1 on the season. She allowed a run in the bottom of the fifth and struck out one as she won for the fourth straight outing.
Game 2: Mount Saint Mary 6 – Mount Saint Vincent 1
The Mount completed the four-game sweep in game two, pounding out 10 more hits and scoring in each of its first three at-bats of the game.
Dentato and
Olivia Ferara (Middletown, N.Y.) started the game with back-to-back doubles, with Dentato scoring on Ferara's hit. Ferara later scored the inning's second run on an RBI groundout off the bat of Bendig.
Mount Saint Mary tacked on another run in the second on a single from Ferara that delivered Norwood and doubled its lead to 6-0 with a three-run third frame. After Sofia Reed (Rockaway, N.J.) and
Nicole Rosner (Brewster, N.Y.) started the inning with a double and a single Norwood singled through the left side to plate two runs and close out the scoring in the game for the Knights.
Ferara, Bendig and Reed all finished game two with a pair of hits with Ferara scoring a run and driving in two. Dentato, Rosner, Victoria Santamauro (Eastchester, N.Y.) and Norwood all finished with a hit and run scored for the Knights.
Ferara picked up her second win of the season in the circle in game two, working 4.0 shutout frames and allowing five hits and fanning one.
Christen Hansen (Cypress, Calif.) earned a three inning save, allowing one run on three hits.
Winners of four straight, Mount Saint Mary stands at 9-3 overall and 7-2 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Knights is a trip to Old Westbury for two games with the Panthers on Wednesday. The conference set will be played a Farmingdale State starting at 5:30 p.m.
