Women's Lacrosse Earns First Victory of the Season Over Sage

Shalvey nets six goals for the Knights

Albany, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team earned its first victory of the season on Tuesday evening as the Knights defeated Sage 20-9 on the road. Sophomore Megan Shalvey (Blauvelt, N.Y.) scored a career-high six goals in the win for the Mount.
 
The Knights got the scoring going early as the Mount got on the board just 56 seconds into the game when Shalvey buried one in the back of the net. Liz Halpin (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) netted her first goal of the night on a free position shot at the 24:50 mark to push the lead to two.
 
Just 36 seconds later, Victoria Ward (Oceanside, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the evening and Nicole Cervone (Shirley, N.Y.) scored off a free position shot at the 23:47 mark of the first half. Following a caused turnover by Courtney Condron (Franklin Square, N.Y.), Anne Dolan (Poughkeepie, N.Y.) scored her second goal of the season with 22:45 remaining.
 
Ward returned to the goal column at the 20:35 mark and then scored her third goal of the game off a feed from Grace Reynolds (Bellmore, N.Y.) at 18:48 as the Knights took a 7-0 lead.

The Gators found the scoreboard for the first time at the 16:03 mark when Caroline Musinski scored off a free position shot. Ward responded with her fourth goal of the game as she put one past the goalie with 13:41 remaining to push the lead to 8-1.
 
Sage scored a man-up goal with 11:41 remaining in the half off the shot of Brittany Gage before the Knights scored a man-up goal of their own by Shalvey with 11:17 left.
 
The Gators cut the lead to 9-3 on a goal from Paige Stewart with 10:42 to go before Shalvey netted her third goal of the night with just under nine minutes to go in the first half for Mount Saint Mary. Condron found the back of the net for the first time before half with 4:03 remaining to move the lead to 11-3 for the Mount.
 
Gage's second goal of the game for Sage cut the lead back down to seven with just over three minutes to go. Mount Saint Mary ended the half with the final two goals as Jackie Lindsay (Baldwin, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the season and Shalvey netted her fourth of the game.
 
The Mount got its lead up to 10 when Ward scored her fifth goal of the night off a pass from Condron just over two minutes into the second half. After a Sage goal, the Knights pushed the lead back to 10 on Shalvey's fifth goal of the game on a feed from Ward.
 
Sage cut the lead to nine once again with 21:12 left in the first half but the Knights pushed the lead back to 10 on Shalvey's sixth goal of the night with 18:11 remaining. The Gators brought the lead back to single digits for the third time in the second half with 16:57 left but Lindsay scored her second goal of the night at 15:00 remaining to push it back to double digits.
 
Michelle Licata (Plainview, N.Y.) scored her first collegiate goal at the 13:53 mark of the second half and then followed it up with her second goal just two minutes later to put the Knights up 19-7.
 
After Musinski scored her third goal of the game for Sage, the Knights hit the 20 goal mark when Lindsay scored her third goal of the night with 8:32 left in the half. The Gators scored the final goal of the game with 3:22 left to make the score 20-9.
 
Shalvey finished the night with six goals, giving her the team lead with nine. She also added three groundballs while Ward added five goals for the Knights. Cat Halpin (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) won a game-high eight draw controls with L. Halpin won four. Four different players finished with a caused turnover for the Mount.

Musinski scored a team-high three goals for the Gators while Gage and Stewart each added two. Gage and Alexandra Lettre each picked up four groundballs while Musinski won a team-high four draw controls.

Jackie Finkel (Warwick, N.Y.) picked up the victory for Mount Saint Mary as she made four saves on the night and picked up four groundballs. Madeline Butta took the loss as she gave up six goals in her 9:25 minutes of action and made five saves.

Mount Saint Mary outshot the Gators 36-15 and won the draw control battle 20-11. The Knights picked up four more groundballs than Sage and committed eight fewer turnovers. 

At 1-3 overall, the Mount's next contest is slated for Tuesday, March 31 at home against Manhattanville. First draw with the Valiants at Kaplan Field is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
