Women's Lacrosse Opens 2020 Slate At Hartwick

Knights picked seventh in the Skyline Conference Preseason Poll

Newburgh, N.Y. – Under the direction of Head Coach Mike Lowell, the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team will open the 2020 season on Saturday afternoon when it heads north to take on Hartwick. Opening Draw with the Hawks is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
 
At A Glance: The Mount is coming off a 2019 season that saw it post a 1-12 overall record and a 1-6 mark against Skyline Conference rivals.
 
The Knights return 13 players from last season's team as the Mount did not have a senior on the roster a year ago.

Attack: The Knights return three players on attack from a season ago in junior Alyssa DiMare (Staten Island, N.Y.) and sophomores Kathryn McQuillan (Baldwin, N.Y.) and Megan Shalvey (Blauvelt, N.Y.). Shalvey tallied 15 goals and a team-high assists last season while DiMare added 10 goals, one assist and 17 draw controls.

The Mount welcomes newcomers Grace Reynolds (Bellmore, N.Y.), Alyssa Alvarez (Harrison, N.Y.), Victoria Ward (Oceanside, N.Y.) and Marilena Mangiaracina (Franklin Square, N.Y.) to the position group.

Midfield: The midfield returns seven players from the 2019 squad and is highlighted by Second Team All-Skyline Conference selection senior Courtney Condron (Franklin Square, N.Y.). Seniors Liz Halpin (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) and Meghan Cumming (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) also return to the Knights in 2020.

Condron led the squad a year ago in goals with 26 while Cumming finished with 21 groundballs, 16 caused turnovers and 15 draw controls for the Mount.
 
Brynn Mulcahy (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Nicole Cervone (Shirley, N.Y.) also return in 2020 as Mulcahy picked up 11 groundballs while Cervone added five goals and three assists while picking up 17 groundballs. appearances.
 
Sophomores Anne Dolan (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and Jackie Lindsay (Baldwin, N.Y.) round out the returning midfielders as Dolan added eight goals last season with Lindsay chipping in six goals.

Newcomers Cat Halpin (Lagrangeville, N.Y.), Carolyn Del Debbio (Plantsville, Conn.) and Samantha Podlas (Newburgh, N.Y.) look to be early contributors in the midfield spot.

Defense: A young backline in 2020 features just one player who appeared in a game last season. Sophomore Kerrigan Shaw (Prospect, Conn.) started all 13 games a year ago and rounded out the season with 11 groundballs.
 
The Knights add four newcomers this season in Caroline Schrag (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y.), Lauren Adair (Amsterdam, N.Y.), Carrie Halpin (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) and Michelle Licata (Plainview, N.Y.) to instantly bolster the backline.

Goalie: Both goalies from a season ago return to the Mount in 2020. Junior Jackie Finkel (Warwick, N.Y.) returns after starting all 13 games last year.. She played a total of 641:14 out of a possible 782:37 between the pipes and racked up 121 saves.
 
Sophomore Grace Monahan (Deer Park, N.Y.) made nine appearances in goal for the Knights, making 13 saves in 141:23 minutes of action.
 
Scouting Hartwick: The Hawks boasted a 7-9 overall record a season ago while going 4-4 in the Empire 8 Conference.
 
The Schedule: The Mount plays four of its first five contests on the road in 2020 before returning to Newburgh for a three-game homestand over Spring Break. After heading to Mount Saint Vincent on March 25, the Knights play four straight conference home games ranging from March 28 to April 18. Mount Saint Mary concludes the season with two road games against St. Joseph's-L.I. and Purchase.
 
What's Next: The Knights play host to non-conference foe Ramapo on Wednesday, March 4 at 6:00 p.m.
