Swimming Returns To Action Against League Rivals Maritime, USMMA

Knights back in action for first time since December 7

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's and Women's Swimming teams will be back in action for the first time since December 7 when they travel to Throggs Neck, N.Y.) to take on league rivals Maritime and USMMA. Events with the Privateers and Mariners are scheduled to get underway at 6:00 p.m.
 
MSMC Men At A Glance: The Mount Saint Mary College Men's program enters Tuesday's meet with a 4-3 overall record and a perfect 4-0 mark against league rivals following wins over Old Westbury and Purchase on December 7.
 
For the third time this season, Robert Kohlus (Wading River, N.Y.) earned three individual victories in a meet for the Knights in the wins over the Panthers. He opened his big day with a victory in the 200-yard individual medley and continued the day with wins in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard individual medley. Kohlus' winning times came in 2:09.65, 24.62 seconds and 1:00.69, respectively.
 
Joseph Tagliareni (Hackettstown, N.J.) put together a strong day for the Knights with a pair of victories to go along with a second place finish. Tagliareni topped the field in the 50-yard backstroke in a time of 28.10 seconds and the 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.83. He added a runner-up showing for the Knights in the 100-yard butterfly, posting a time of 1:01.58.
 
Mount Saint Mary also received a victory and a runner-up finish on Saturday from Sam Kenney (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.). Kenney posted his victory in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:11.47 and took second place points for the Mount in the 50-yard breaststroke, swimming a time of 32.78 seconds.
 
Matt Gallo (Clark, N.J.) and Philip Crandall (Ravena, N.Y.) supported the Mount's win with runner-up finishes, while freshman Tyler Williams (Middlebury, Conn.) earned a third place showing for the Knights. Gallo took second in the 200-yard individual medley and added a third place swim in the 100-yard individual medley. Crandall swam to a second place finish in the 100-yard backstroke and Williams placed third in the 50-yard butterfly for the Knights.
 
Mount Saint Mary wrapped up the day with a win in the 400-yard medley freestyle relay with the team of Gallo, Williams, Tagliareni and Kohlus posting a time of 3:42.57.
 
MSMC Women At A Glance: The Mount Saint Mary Women's program is also off to a strong start, holding a 5-3 overall record and an unblemished 5-0 mark against league rivals after topping Old Westbury, Purchase and St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on December 7.
 
Samantha Gangemi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took the top spot in both the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard backstroke for the Knights in the team's last competition. Her initial win of the day came in a time of 1:10.41 before she bested the field in the backstroke race with a time of 1:11.02.
 
Katie Barber (Shelton, Conn.) continued her steady season on Saturday with victories in the 50-yard freestyle and the 50-yard butterfly. Her winning times came in 28.07 seconds and 29.85 seconds and she went on to score a second place finish, behind Gangemi, in the 100-yard backstroke event.
 
Emily Gursky (Oakville, Conn.) and Emily Crowley (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) as well as juniors Daley O'Keefe (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Shayla McCarroll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) also picked up victories for the Knights. Gursky won the 50-yard backstroke in 34.47 seconds, while Crowley topped the field in the 50-yard breaststroke in 35.99 seconds.
 
O'Keefe took first place points in the 100-yard individual medley on Saturday in a time of 1:13.17 and added third place finishes in the 50-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley. McCarroll touched out first in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:22.92 and was the runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley.
 
Kristen Dwight (Newfield, N.J.) and Taylor Hollis (East Hartford, Conn.) also turned in strong swims on Saturday for the Mount. Dwight placed third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 29.53 seconds, while Hollis took second place in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 36.52 seconds.

In addition to winning eight individual events on Saturday, the Mount took the top spot in each of the two relay events. The team of Gursky, Crowley, Gangemi and Megan Prendergast (Southbury, Conn.) opened the day with a winning time of 2:11.73 in the 200-yard medley relay, while the quartet of Dwight, McCarroll, Barber and O'Keefe closed the day with a time of 4:23.00 in the 400-yard freestyle race.
 
What's Next: The Knights will close out the home schedule on Saturday when they celebrate Senior Day. The Mount welcomes Baruch, FDU-Florham and Western Connecticut to the Kaplan Center for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference meet.
