Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team hits the road for its first road match of the season on Thursday when it travels to Western Connecticut State. First serve with the Colonials in Danbury, Conn. is set for 5:30 p.m.
At A Glance: The Knights enter Thursday's match at West Conn at 1-2 overall and are coming off their first win of the season, a 5-4 triumph over Pratt on Sunday.
Fiver different Knights have produced a singles victory through three matches for the Mount, led by
Michelle Carnovale (Massapequa, N.Y.) who is unbeaten in three outings at the top singles position. Carnovale has also teamed with
Victoria Clay (Saint James, N.Y.) for a first doubles win.
With three victories to open the season, Carnovale has moved into a tie for eighth place on the Mount's all-time wins list with 39. Canrovale is just five triumphs shy of moving into the top-five all-time in singles wins for the Knights.
Sophomore
Katie Murray (Highland Mills, N.Y.) is also off to a good start for the Knights, sitting at 2-1 in singles competition. Both of her victories have come at the fourth slot for the Mount and she has teamed with three different doubles partners, joining
Katrina Imperio (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) for a third doubles win over Pratt on Sunday.
Last Time Out: The Knights got into the win column with a hard fought 5-4 victory over visiting Pratt on Sunday. Carnovale, Murray and
Emily Quinn (Montgomery, N.Y.) scored singles wins, with Quinn finding the win column for the first time in 2019.
The Knights also took two of the three doubles matches against the Cannoneers, with
Miyanna Vernon (Liberty, N.Y.) and
Jessalyn Goetz (Bethel, N.Y.) earning a 8-4 win at the second position and Murray and Imperio cruising to an 8-1 win at the third flight.
Scouting Western Connecticut: The Colonials enter Thursday's tilt at 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the Little East Conference. Western Connecticut has been dealt losses by Bard and FDU-Florham with its win coming in a 5-4 decision over league rival UMass-Dartmouth.
Carole Allers is 3-0 for the Colonials at the second singles position, while Sarah Silva has produced wins at the fifth singles position in each of her two appearances.
Recent History: Since the spring of 2014, the Mount and Western Connecticut have met seven times, with the Colonials winning four times. The Knights stopped a three match run for Western Connecticut on September 13, 2018 with a 5-4 victory in Newburgh.
What's Next: The Knights open Skyline Conference play with three straight matches against league rivals. The conference run opens with Yeshiva on Sunday and continues with a home match against Manhattanville on September 24 and a road tilt at Sarah Lawrence on September 28.
