Softball Continues Road Trip With Old Westbury, St. Joseph's-L.I.

Knights look to keep perfect conference record intact

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary Softball team returns to Skyline Conference action on the road this weekend, traveling to Old Westbury on Saturday afternoon and St. Joseph's-L.I. on Sunday. The twinbill with the Panthers is set for 2:00 p.m. while the doubleheader with the Golden Eagles is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
 
At A Glance: The Knights have won their first two Skyline Conference sets of the season but dropped back to back midweek doubleheaders this week, entering the week at 5-13 overall and a perfect 4-0 in league action. The Mount is coming off two losses, 4-0 and 4-1, to Western Connecticut State on Thursday evening

Junior Emily Lang (Westtown, N.Y.) is off to a hot start for the Knights, hitting .439 and posting a 1.080 OPS in 57 at-bats. She leads the Mount in hits (25), runs (12), total bases (34), slugging percentage (.596) and on-base percentage (.484) and owns the team lead in RBI with 11.
 
Lauren Oury (Bethpage, N.Y.) is hitting .283 heading into the weekend and is second on the team in doubles with three.
 
The Mount's pitching staff was bolstered with the return on Bridget Bennett (Gardiner, N.Y.) who has worked 19.2 innings to date and has fanned 14 batters and holds a 3.20 ERA. Morgan O'Neill (Little Falls, N.J.) has pitched to a 3.00 earned run average in nine appearances and is 2-3 on the season with a team-high 22 strikeouts.
 
Among the Skyline Conference leaders, Lang is third in the league in batting average and second in slugging percentage. Bennett paces the conference in opponent batting average (.197) and is one of three pitchers in the conference to record a save.
 
Last Time Out: The Mount Saint Mary College Softball dropped its second straight non-conference set on Thursday following 4-0 and 4-1 losses to Western Connecticut. Senior Amanda Almodovar (Goshen, N.Y.) finished game one with a hit and two stolen bases.

Five different Knights finished the opener with a hit, with Almodovar finishing up 1-for-3 with a pair of steals. She is now a perfect 6-for-6 in steal attempts on the season. O'Neill, Oury, Bennett and Nicolette Moustouka (Seaford, N.Y.) all finished with a hit for the Mount. Bennett took the loss in game one for the Knights and fell to 1-2 on the season. She worked 6.0 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits, striking out three and walking two batters. 

Almodovar, Lang, MacKenzie Hymes (Middletown, Del.) and Jillian Picarello (Troy, N.Y.) recorded the hits in game two for the Mount, with Lang ripping her fourth double of the season. Oury scored for the eighth time on the season with Victoria Santomauro (Eastchester, N.Y.) driving in a run and drawing a walk for the Knights. Hymes suffered the game two loss in the circle and fell to 2-6 on the season. She allowed only one earned run on six hits in 4.0 innings, striking out two and walking one. Christen Hansen (Cypress, Calif.) came on to work 2.0 scoreless innings in relief, striking out three.

A Look At Old Westbury: The Panthers enter Saturday's set at 9-8 overall and 2-6 in the Skyline. Old Westbury is coming off a pair of non-conference wins over Baruch on Thursday afternoon.
 
Johanna Metz paces the Old Westbury attack with a .400 batting average on the season with Amanda Neenan hitting .368 and Jessica Schwartz checking in at .357. Nicole Baron leads the team with 18 runs scored with Schwartz has produced four triples and Samantha Arcese adding a team-high 18 RBI.
 
Baron carries the load for the Panthers in the circle as she has already thrown 76.2 innings on the season. She has posted a 3.10 ERA and struck out 86 at the top of the Skyline leaderboard.

As a team, New Paltz is hitting .271 as a team with 21 doubles and seven triples. The pitching staff pitches to a 4.09 team ERA with 110 strikeouts against 47 walks and a .297 batting average against.
 
Scouting The Golden Eagles: St. Joseph's-L.I. begins the week at 8-8 overall (4-0 Skyline) and will take on St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Saturday before hosting the Knights on Sunday. 

The Golden Eagles' offensive attack features three players with at least 20 at-bats hitting .300 or better. Jessa DiFina leads the way, hitting an even .354 in 48 at-bats, adding a team-high 11 stolen bases. Lindsay Vess is hitting .346, with four doubles, three walks and 13 RBI.
 
Four different pitchers have thrown 20 innings or more for St. Joseph's-L.I. as freshman Catherine Zucker leads the way with a 2.65 ERA in 34.1 innings of work. Patricia McGloin has worked 25.0 innings, sporting a 3.36 ERA while Alyssa Rivera and Katelynn Valente have each tossed 20.1 innings.
 
As a team, the Golden Eagles are hitting .263 and hold a .349 on-base percentage. Opponents are hitting .277 against St. Joseph's-L.I. who hold a 3.74 team ERA.
 
What's Next: Following four Skyline contests, the Knights return home for a midweek contest with non-conference foe Ramapo. The doubleheader with the Roadrunners is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.
