Men’s Tennis Looks To Clinch Postseason Berth Against USMMA

The winner of Tuesday’s match earns Skyline tournament berth

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Tennis team hits the road for a crucial Skyline Conference match against the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Tuesday. First serve in Kings Point is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
 
At A Glance: The Knights enter Tuesday's tilt with Merchant Marine winners of four of their last five matches and with an 9-3 overall record and a 3-3 mark against league rivals.
 
Sophomore Jaden Tiriolo (Cheshire, Conn.) is 11-1 in singles matches at the third slot heading into the week and is one of five Knights to have at least six singles victories on the season. Senior Chris McGorty (Bellmore, N.Y.) holds a 6-6 mark at the top singles flight and has teamed with Tiriolo at the first doubles position for nine wins in 12 outings overall, including a 3-3 mark against league rivals.
 
Senior Shane Terry (Southampton, N.Y.) is in the midst of a strong senior season, posting a 7-5 mark in singles play at the second position that includes a 3-3 mark against conference opponents. Joe Ryan (Wantagh, N.Y.) at the fifth position and Matt Gallo (Clark, N.J.) at the fourth slot are also having strong season, with Ryan holding a 7-5 record and Gallo posting seven wins in ten outings overall.
 
In addition to the top pair, Terry and Gallo have seen success in eight doubles matches together, winning eight times overall, including a 5-1 mark in conference tilts. Ryan and senior Connor Bacci (Bayside, N.Y.) have teamed up for victories in each of the three matches they have been paired together at third doubles.
 
Mount Saint Mary holds a 43-28 record as a team in singles play, including an 18-17 mark against conference opponents to go along with a 26-10 mark in doubles play that includes a 10-8 record against league foes.
 
Scouting USMMA: The Mariners play host on Tuesday with a 5-5 record that includes a 3-3 record in tries against league rivals. USMMA has dropped its last two matches, including a 9-0 loss against Yeshiva on Tuesday.
 
Daniel Zakrevski begins the week at 3-4 at the first singles flight for the Mariners with Justin McGaffigan winning five of his seven matches at second singles thus far. Brandon Deeter is 3-1 overall at third singles while William Peterson is 3-0 at sixth singles.
 
In doubles action, the duo of Zakrevski and McGaffigan is 4-4 at the top slot with Collin Campbell and Deeter winning four of their six matches at the second position. John Guettlein and Madeline Smith are having a strong season at the third position with a 5-3 record together.
 
In singles play, Merchant Marine is 28-25 overall and 19-16 against league rivals and adds an 18-9 mark in doubles play that includes a 12-6 conference record.
 
Around The Skyline: Yeshiva enters the week at the league's front-runner with a 7-0 conference mark, with Farmingdale State sitting at a 4-1 record. Purchase checks in with a 4-2 record while Mount Saint Mary and USMMA are tied at 3-3.
 
What's Next: Pending Tuesday's result, the Knights look to begin play in the Skyline Conference tournament next week. Match times, opponents and locations to be announced following Saturday's play.
